I like the games, I like the challenge. I like to exercise my mind. A mindless past time, a waste of time you say? I don't agree, maybe for you , but not for me. Write an article, I do, I do. There are just times I want to see how many words I can make out of "I won the lottery today". There are just times I want to name every red item I can think of. Words beginning with the letter s, I'm there. Just give me the request and I am on my way, writing the answers and posting as fast as my little fingers can slide over the keyboard. All these games are exercises for the brain. All these games are like a warm up. You know how you stretch before a baseball game and I don't mean the fans in the bleachers. You stretch to warm up those muscles. These silly little games that appear to be purely for points, well let the points flow, as that's okay for me it is a good warm up.
Hey, don't want to play, then don't. But if you want someone to list answers like crazy, if I can I'll be there as soon as I see you put out the let's play this game sign. We all get points and I get to feel like my brain got a good work out! (and my poor little fingers too!)
Does this mean I can't write an article or poem? Not at all, I can write with the best of them, but you know sometimes I just want to play....the games!!

I play them when I feel like it, and when I don't, find them easy enough to pass on by. Imo if they have value to anyone else, even just a moment of fun, that is a valid reason for them to be there until and unless Gather says otherwise. As you pointed out, they are good warm ups. And you certainly do add a lot of articles of depth and substance to the site in your own right.
