Great Editorial about Fred Thompson and Federalism. It is great to have a cantidate that understands what our system is based on. I look forward to more of Fred on the Campagin Trail!

By BRENDAN FARRINGTON, Associated Press Writer Fri Sep 14, 11:37 AM ET THE VILLAGES, Fla. - Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson gave no opinion Thursday when asked about efforts by President Bush and Congress to keep Terri Schiavo alive, saying he does not remember details of the right-to-die case that stirred national debate.
Thompson was asked in an interview for Bay News 9's "Political Connections" program whether he thought Congress' intervention to save the life of the brain-damaged woman two years ago was appropriate.
"I can't pass judgment on it. I know that good people were doing what they thought was best," Thompson said. "That's going back in history. I don't remember the details of it."
Good old Fred has lots of name recognition, but he's no Ronald Reagan. Unless one has been a chief executive, say of a State, such a person doesn't know beans about Federalism as it should be applied.
I too look forward to hearing more and more of Fred's stance on 'key' issues. I also believe he has a good idea of what our government should and potentially can be.
David he did the smart thing and not wade into an old issue that still is a point of contention in Florida. I say good for him. You show what is wrong in politics today. Instead of listening to him you look to find one non-answer to attack him on. I guess you must really fear him.
MDP - I've listened a great deal to Fred for years as Congressman from TN and as he "worked the Senate" to get SCOTUS justices through the maze of confirmation. He was just doing his lobbying job for the criminal administration, so I shouldn't be too hard on him. Everyone deserves a good mouthpiece. He even said so about Scooter. His hand is into too much for me to give him much more credit than being able to follow a script faithfully, no matter how bad the plot.
Thompson seems so low enery and old, almost feeble or doddering. I don't think he has it in him to be President and I don't think he would be a good one, but then again he would not even be there if any of the other Republicans were connecting with the people. I'm thinking McCain is going to be one after going around and round. I thought he was out but the others are so bad that he looks good.
Lobbying I see no problem with. I remember he differnetly as a Senator as he chaired the Intelligence commitee. He is usually seen as uneffective becuase he did not spend 4 or 5 terms in the sentate so you can get your names on bills. I admire him for setting his own term limit and leaving. He is extremely intelligent and I think his theory on government would move America in a better direction
Bruce glad that you saw all the talking points on Fred. He is not tired or old if you see him out on the trail. Lets be honest if that is all they can muster up against him I think he will be good to go.
I have not read anything about Thompson let along looked at any talking points. Why? There is nothing of record out there so far on his presidential bid except ultra-right-wing. Fred is not what Americans want, and just in general we need to swing the pendulum back a bit, the one thing we do not need for sure is one or the other party totally taking over, and the militant Republicans have almost done that ... think Taliban. Maybe this is a strategy to come out with a whimper and build up energy ... but Thompson looked out of it on the Tonight show and like he is just not really into the run for the Presidency ... the guy is in his 70's ... that is just too old these days ... remember Reagan and his Alzheimer's and falling asleep in meetings? ugh!
MDP - You are spot on in the matter of direction the country should proceed. I'm just not sure he is the experienced executive/navigator we need. I'm a little unclear on what his Intelligence Committee service actually accomplished for us.
Thompson's record is rather weak...he has never stood much for federalism in the past so I'm puzzled why he is making noises about it now. His overall record is that of a moderate Repub not the fiscal hawk he claims now to be. He has never made any strong Constitutional stand that I'm aware of either....
He is not striking any sparks in this heart, only way I can vote for him is simply as a vote against Hillary.

I can understand that but it is important to remember in the past this is when people decided if they were going to run.
