Indie or Mainstream?

When it comes to music, film, and other forms of entertainent do you prefer watching or listening to independent or mainstream media. And why? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

I am pretty much all over the spectrum. There are a lot of alternative bands out there right now that I am really in to. Some indie, I have just discovered some and now searching for more. If it my body wanna dance, I'm hooked.

i think i prefer alot of indie stuff, just because what is aat the theatres and on the radio kind of bores me. and alot of indie stuff makes me think.

Mainstream for the most part for me...there is something about the film used in indie's that disturbs me...I get anxiety...isn't that weird??

I like them both. I think that the independent stuff gives more variety than mainstream because they do what they want and not just what will sell.

Indie art seems to be much more deep and meaningful than most of the watered down, highly saturated stuff that is popular or mainstream.

In general, indie stuff is more interesting. But it is harder to find. I have always loved music and I always did the extra work to find the good stuff. Now I am married and I have 2 kids, so I have to spend my time changing diapers and mowing the lawn, so I don't get to hunt down new stuff as much as I used to. Although the internet makes it easier.

But mainstream movies and music almost always has the color-by-numbers feel where the song or movie was created using a formula that makes it sound like or look like everything else that the media companies are puking out their doors.

I find that I'm much more gratified by the Independent Film Makers; I get a sense of the art of the craft rather than the craving for box office bucks. I enjoy seeing true acting abilities in the "unknown" actors.

Of course, if the topic of a film is interesting to me, I'll invest in the ticket price of the movies of the Hollywood Big Boys. (But not for the "STAR".)

Music. Hate the radio. I despise the music I'm fed by market research. That isn't me. I'm drawn to instrumental music for the most part. I t allows me freedom to think my own thoughts without being drawn into the lyrics. Rock (Jeff Beck, Satriani) hard rock (Black Label Society) guitar jazz ( Jeff Golub, Charlie Byrd, John Jorgenson) and world fusion (Strunz y Farah, Niyaz, Jesse Cook, Bond) pretty much anyone who is kicking ass on their instrument. WHether it's a violin, 'cello or guitar.

I do like some vocalists. Sade, Natalie Merchant, those deadpan Brazilian female singers (ala' Brasil 66) Bossa Nova, classical, I guess I'm an eclectic niche market listener. Either my ipod or streaming audio. The radio makes me ill.

For the most part I'm mainstream; especially with movies. I like action flicks, sci fi 7 fantasy (I want my happy endings &*^%*&%). Television gets a little odd because I find most sitcoms too predictable & I find most of the situations embarrassing, not funny. Again, I like sci fi & fantasy shows with some dramas like CSI tossed into the mix.

But for music, I'm all over the place. I like Salem Blues, 1950's hillbilly pop, folk, ragtime, top 40, glam rock, and the most oddball of all: filk.
