New Secretary of Defense Resurrects An Old Line

On this Sunday morning, our new Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates, appeared on "This Week With George Stephanopolis."

In discussing where additional troops will come from, should General Patreaus's March report cite a need for more troops, Gates said:

"I don't want to get into that type of hypothetical."

This "line" bothers me to no end. It was bandied about by the administration back in the days before invading Iraq. They did not want to "get into hypotheticals" over what might happen after Saddam was removed from power; they didn't want to talk about what might happen after the Iraqi military and police forces were dismantled; they didn't want to talk about how our invasion might stir up other countries in the Middle East.

Where is their eye to the future?

Where is their pre-planning for possible and probable contingencies?

Where is their humble realization that they don't know everything?

They might just as well be saying; We're going to do whatever we want, and we won't talk about it with anyone we don't want to.

Oh wait, Ruhmsfeld actually did make those statements.

The flag of this administration has been, and seemingly continues to be "the finger."

Americans are dying from this lack of willingness to hear and think about what others are seeing. America's honor is slipping.

More prayers go up for our citizens in uniform.

They are obviously going to need them.
