245 - Shots Fired . . . possible 667/187 attempt muder - code 3!
245(a)2 assault with a firearm . . . shot(s) fired? 667/187 . . . at somebody?? This gets the pulse racing for officers . . . and the cars (with lights and sirens)! Note the gun in this left-handed officers hand.

With guns drawn and hearts racing the LA Sheriff's Dept. secures the perimeter. A perimeter is the area sectioned off . . . nobody in or out . . . even of their homes! This officer races to get to an observation post without being shot and to send people back indoors.

There is less than no time to waste . . . if the suspect passes through the perimeter they have established . . . he WILL escape . . . and others may be hurt. Paramedics and ambulance cannot even enter to treat the wounded.

SIR! Get Back in the HOUSE! (A neighbor tried to go pick up his child from school).

All traffic . . . pedestrian and vehicular . . . is prohibited.

All officers keep each other in the line of sight. This officer connects SW with SE (shown below).

Just in case . . .

The LAPD lends their air unit to conduct surveillance.

Eventually, The LASD sends in their own unit to cover!!

Code 4. (All clear). Suspect in custody.
People wonder about some things. Concurrent sentences for example. Charged with 667/187pc and 245(a)2 . . . convictions from ONE act will run concurrent . . . served at the same time. If he got away and carjacked someone several blocks away, he'd get consecutive for that. This way, they can drop the 667/187pc in a plea bargain and get the Assault with a firearm conviction without a trial.

As an officer I use these codes too . . . which do you ask about . . . I thought I explained them in the text. My Nikki takes 5 shots a second. (Besides - YOU know me)!

Great photo-essay, Doyle!
Crimes happen where people live. No community is immune and my neighborhood is a good one. This is the only incident I have seen like this in my area . . . though other neighborhoods in LA have a much more frequent incidence of thisw stuff! :)

Thanks so much for featuring my first photo essay in your group. :)

Talk about the shock effect! I have to laugh although this is not funny, because I expected to see pictures of babies and dogs or kittens and this almost made me choke.
Doyle, this is very, very good, and quite the thing I would like to see more of on Gather. I do believe this will be the first photo essay that I will bookmark, if you don't mind. It's profound and also troubling, but true-to-life.
My girlfriend, Michelle, is from L.A. and although I have been there (visiting) many times I guess I don't have the insight she does. She tells me the police are HORRIBLE, worse than imaginable, typical Rodney King.
Very profound. And troubling.
After I return from the store I need to look at this again. Second look. The first was just a little too shocking.
Thanks, Doyle.
Kudos again, my friend.
Of course they probably still won't make it into the playoffs...now that's a crime!

Again, excellent photo essay. I got stopped last year by four police cars. Would you like to know why? I was driving without my lights on. I didn't know. I could see perfectly well. But it took four squad cars to talk to one female about it, and then let me go on my way.
Wonderful photo essay, great captures. This is a 10****
btw....how close were you to this action? I know you said in your neighborhood, but it looks like you are right in the middle of it.
Thank you.
Nalita: Thanks very much. There are good and bad officers and they do have a propensity to over-react here . . .
Karl Klein: This is, clearly, not how it would be used in a newspaper. You might also have mentioned that the photos would not be framed or tagged with 'Chastain Photography'. Of course . . . if it were serious photojournalism . . . I'd be cashing my check now too. Your concept that the pictures must say the story is more a Photo Essay consideration than a photojournalism concept. But the words, absent the photos would be miserable and the photos absent the few words I added do, in my humble opinion, tell a story. Guess we'll agree to disagree . . . :)
Denny Saw that story plastered all over our TVs this morning. I have many friend in the LAPD, Sacramento PD, Sacramento Sheriff's Dept. and the California Highway patrol . . . all good. But I have heard with my own ears a LA Sheriff's officer threaten to arrest a person for, and I quote, "Shits and giggles" to to attempt to impose his will.
Sheryl: Of course . . . any neighborhood who's star resident is the King of Cool . . . ;)
Thanks Lainie!

Glad everything turned out ok. Thanks for sharing.
Uhhhhhh . . . You know I don't know why so long. I'm certainly taking photos daily . . . Hmmmmmm . . . maybe that has something to do with it. Maybe I shouldn't wait so long for the next one, eh? :)
