I did it! I read the whole Bible. I bought a book that had a reading from the Bible for each day of the year so that when the year is over the Bible has been read. Was it worth it? This review probably lost all those who do not believe in God. I think even if I did not believe in God I still would have enriched my life for the reading of it. Truth is truth no matter if it came from Budda or Jesus. The Bible is rich in knowledge and inspiration. Reading the Bible helped me be more compassionate. It helped me look at my life and what my values are. It helped me see how I treat other people. I learned it is better to give than receive. Much of what I learned is obvious and common sense. If I treat people miserably I will end up up with no friends and miserable myself. I learned money does not guarantee I will be happy. I was challenged to make the world a better place. And I learned there is a force bigger than I am and that force shows me a better way to live. I also learned that people today are no different than the people in the Bible. In the Bible some people are kind and generous. Some are brave. Some are willing to stick up for their beliefs. Some people are greedy. Some prey on the weak and care not for others. I learned some people are just plain evil. Finally I realized how much our language and thoughts have their basis in the Bible. For example some of our sayings come from the Bible. A drop in the bucket is in the Bible. The handwriting on the wall is in the Bible. As numerous as the sands on the beach is in the Bible.
There were places I found to be repetitive. The prophets tended to repeat the same themes for example. But the story of Moses and bring the Israelites from Egypt is a great adventure story. Most of us know about David and Goliath. I often hear commentaries how a ball game was a pitting of David and Goliath. Businesses are sometimes said to having a David and Goliath battle against a bigger company.
I am proud of myself for reading the Bible in a year. It has made me a better person and put my understanding of the Bible in a whole new perspective. Want a challenge? Try getting a book on reading the Bible in a year and challenging yourself to keep up with the readings. I add that sometimes I was just too tired to read a Bible passage so I did not read that day. It does not matter. It will just take a little longer but the goal will still be accomplished. The effort is worth it even if you do not believe in God.
