The No Child Left Behind Program is going to leave YOUR child in the dirt. Facedown and bleeding.
The world's biggest industry is arts and media. The San Diego Comicon International -- which now covers every kind of book, movie and media in entertainment -- is the biggest convention of ANY kind in the western hemisphere.
Tutorial, arts and marketing sites make it possible to become a saleable artist and writer with no need to spend a penny on advanced education. Anybody willing to put in the work and the study can have the skills needed. Nobody in this new industry is going to ask your kids if they've got a degree so long as they understand layers, colors and brush tools, and have put in the thousands of hours it takes to develop a drawing hand. It's wide-open to everybody -- and nobody can be locked out of it, for any reasons. The Graphic Artists Guild and the National Writers Union take on major companies in the Supreme Court and win creator's rights.
In order to take advantage of this new industry, a child must be able to think. He or she must be able to study, question, analyze, and realize very quickly.
What do the WASLs teach your kids to do?
Answer: to spit out rote answers like machines.
Now think what rote learning can open up for your kids: the ability to obey, the ability to shut up and do as they're told. Organizations where one of the most-quoted phrases is: "Shut up, troop! Nobody told you to think!"
That's right. Your kid is being readied for the armies of the American hegemony.
The kids whose parents know better -- and who don't believe in war as a solution for anything -- are going to sit back while your kids are fed through the meat-grinder.
They're already homeschooling, and not to teach their kids rote religious thinking, either. They're teaching their kids to think, analyze, negotiate. They're getting those kids dual citizenships. They're organizing friends overseas in case they have to move. They don't care about your little gene bundles because they have their own gene bundles to save. If you're willing to throw away your genetic future on these wars, they'll let you do it. Then their gene lines will survive. Evolution works.
If you've got a kid and that kid is being forced to study the ironclad answers for the WASLs, then you should be in the streets screaming for that kid's future.

Maybe I missed it, but I don't recall what the WASL stands for.
The public schools can be very good for the category of child I call GAC's (Gifted Assertive Cooperatives). My first son was this kind and now he's kicking older butts at MIT.
My second son was designated Talented and Gifted before Son 1. Son 2's misfortune is that he is artistic. You want to get your brain killed in public school? Be a boy who does art. Of course, you cannot be that beyond preschool if you value your life.
You know, I doubt this is only true in the USA. I think it might be true nearly anywhere. School nightmares are the most common kind on the planet. They are a huge reason for the depression epidemic.
