Does Your Kid Have a MySpace Page?

No, but one of our dogs has her own page. She has more 'friends' than my wife and I combined.

Yes my daughter has a myspace, under the following conditions. It is set to private, she is not allowed to add anyone without my permission, I have the password and ability to go in and read everything that goes on. So far really all that has happened is that a couple of the boys used a curse word on her comments page, which I deleted and sent him a message asking him not to use that sort of language on her page.
My entire family, both close and far communicate on it, so far it is harmless under my suppervision but if it ever gets to the point where it gets out of hand, we have agreed to delete it.

It's hard giving them choices sometimes where they could make a mess out of it, but if we don't offer the ability to trust them, how will they ever have the ability to become trust worthy?

My son is 12 soon to be 13 and yes he has a myspace page. I do monitor it almost everyday. I am able to log into his account and read whatever I feel I need too. He is a good kid who would cut off his tongue before he said a bad word, which is funny because I swear like a truck driver sometimes *blush*. The internet can be a very scary thing for kids/parents with all the sickos out there. I did delete a few friends I felt were too old, too weird etc for him. I protect him with this just like I would anything else in his life.

I think you should monitor your son's youtube page like Mel B. is monitoring her daughter's page. There is too much of a chance that a preditor will get access to the page otherwise. Also, they can keep it clean, there is no need to use foul language even if most users of the page are teens. Make it a responsibility for them to maintain it according to your family values and they will be disgusted when others do not comply. Mother of a 12 year old and 9 year old.

My nephew is 10 and seems to want to grow up fast. He always asks me about these pages or things I do that are for at least 13 and up. I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted to set up a MySpace page.

What's become nice about MySpace is that it has given more privacy options. So, while you could give your son the freedom of having one, you can still have it controlled. You should look into it. Better to know what they're doing, than to not. My sister's old friend has a son who is 15 and has a MySpace page and she doesn't monitor him. My sister went to look at his page and saw he lied about his age and put that he was 18. If only his mother knew.

No, I still feel my oldest is to young to have a myspace page. Although when the time comes I will monitor it like there is no tomorrow. My kids aren't even allowed on the computers with out me knowing what sites they are going to.

Hmm...I'm just a little older than your son and I've got one that I never used. Made it because I've got some out-of-state friends that have myspace and my cousin is on duty and that's about the only way to get in touch with him. I haven't been on it in about 6 months, though, and I've got an assumed name on there that only my friends know if I give it to them, so I'm pretty covered about those things.

As for the swearing, I can't say. My mother is always sensoring me and i used to get my mouth slapped for swearing, so I don't swear around her. On the other hand, my father doesn't care, so I tend to swear around him and in school with my friends. I don't do it very often, but usually when I get really mad or annoyed or whatever...so I guess it sort of depends on what you're going for. The positive side is that my mother never has to hear me swear and she has her way, but the bad thing is that she's sort of cutting herself out of my life in a way because I always have to be careful of what I say and so I tend to say less, especially if I'm PMSing or being really moody or stressed.

my kids are too young, but my wife and i both have one, it makes easy to find out about our friends and family, it was soo easy to set up. have you guys asked your children if they have any "other" my space pages set up?thinking back to my childhood i wouldhave asked my parents to set one up for me, then set one up for my self secretly using a "phantom" e-mail. (I was always thumbing my nose at authority). then while my parents thought that i was on the page that they helped to set up, i could have gone onto the page not checked. basicaly keeping 2 pages.

My 17-year-old has a myspace and facebook page. I have had to have her pull her myspace page twice because of people harassing her. Now her pages are private and only people she invites can check her pages. She has lots of adults in the family who are friends, and we all monitor her pages.

None of my kids have a myspace, but I let my daughter log onto mine. I have what's called IM safer and they moniter all conversations to make sure nothing inappropiate is going on and they email if anything is suspicious.

my kids have had my space pages for ages. my daughter designs pages for people and is going to school to learn IT and my son just graduated from IT class. the net is going to be a big part of their lives and as long as you teach them how to be safe, I see nothing wrong with it. I dont have a my space page i dont see what the draw to that place is.

both my kids have one,, my son is 16 and I moniter it,, and I have his password,,, and he even has face book again I moniter it. my daughter is 20 yet i did moniter hers till last year,, now she is married, I go to her page, and see what is there.. I also have one and keep a close eye on all my family my neice and nephew and other have pages also...

I have a Myspace account so that I can check on my kids and their friends and get to know who they "really" are !!
My 17 yr old daughter has an account but she only gets on it about once a month and it is kept "private"
My 10 yr old and 12 yr old DO NOT have accounts
My 19 yr old son and his girlfriend have them and it is the WORST thing that ever comes between their relationship.

I WISH MYSPACE WERE TO SHUT DOWN FOREVER AND JUST GO AWAY. Myspace is about the same as going into a cheap sleazy bar. I wish that someone would get a grip and get this site to go away because there is so much drama and bad stuff because of this website. Look at that girl that killed herself because someone messed with he because of a Myspace account.

My son and his girlfriend fight so much because of Myspace and "who posted to her account" "who messaged him" etc on and on and on.....

My boys are only 3 and 6(gonna be 7 in a few weeks) so they do not have one. My oldest wants one but under no condition will i set him one up, if myspace is around when he's 14 or 15 they we will talk...lol

My child is a little addicted to the Internet, so we do our best to limit his time surfing online in whole with help of internet filter called Ez Internet Timer. I think it’s not a good idea to ban Internet, MySpace or anyother online activity. Chidren will be still looking for the way to manage it. But I understand that I am personally responsible for what my child do. That’s why we teach our child about Internet safety, spend time with him while he’s online. We also put your computer in a public area of your home, so I can see what they are doing and who they are talking to. I also created my own MySpace account and tried to be a friend with my child. I can view everything that is publicly available on my teen's MySpace site now.

I really don't think it's ok for parents to monitor their teen's internet use. I mean your kid is old enough to know what is a bad idea( like, don't give out personal info to strangers, etc.) and you should certainly make sure he knows all that. But I don't think you should really personally read what is on there (although I think that's more true in the case of social networking sites than things like YouTube which are completely public anyway). I think that when a parent is looking at the stuff on their kid's Myspace or Facebook (or whatever) it's like the equivalent of reading their diary or eavesdropping on their conversations with friends (which it essentially is). If your kid is a teenager you don't need to be so overprotective, and it's just an unnecessary invasion of privacy. There may be news stories about internet creeps but usually the kid did something stupid, and it's more likely for someone to hurt them in real life then to find them on the internet and kidnap them or whatever. I got a Myspace when I was 14 that I used a lot until I got more into Facebook junior year. It's pretty easy to just make your profile private, and almost no one talks to anyone on there who they don't know in real life anyway.
