Point about so-called sectarian wars: All the tribes and their reactions to incursion go back to wars over a resource that has been the cause of bloodshed in that region -- or any desert region: water.
Desert peoples have very ornate rules about the use of water. When the rules over water break down, then another fluid resource becomes much less important: blood.
We've gotten ourselves into a region where the mindset is fight or die for something to drink. Gods help us.

I can't recommend the book Gaia's Garden by Toby Hemenway highly enough. On its cover is a xeriscaped front yard in Los Alamos, NM. It is so good-looking and requires no water. He says a neighbor wanted one too right after.
I love to shock people, so here goes. I save #1, and so do tons of my friends, and this is in Portland where we just about drown every winter. The nice thing about winter is I don't have to dilute much because God does it. You should see my geraniums!
I've got more stories about this if you are interested. Doing this is so naughty. I'm 57, and it makes me feel, oh, 15?
Blessings to you,
