First of all, let's take a look at what Janie and I didn't buy at the Lynnhurst Neighborhood Garage sale. Honestly, the demographics of this area are such that we didn't see that much annoying stuff. It was more a matter of "We already have two of those" or "we don't have room for it."
Least interesting thing we saw today:

baby einstein tapes (unopened)
price - $30
no sale
We don't have any kids, but that's not the point here. I don't know if you've heard about the latest study done regarding baby einstein. Apparently enough years have passed to provide a pool of kids who have and have not used this. It turns out the kids who used these tapes did *worse* at math than kids who did not listen to them.
Other things we did not buy yesterday:

Bird-shaped pillow
price - $6
no sale
In case you think going to yard sales doesn't sound like fun, exhibit A to the contrary is one of my favorite pictures ever of Jane. We like birds a lot, and generally regard them as funny creatures. That someone would make a pillow that looked like a goofy bird got us rocking. We don't want it, but we had fun with it.

Wooden trunk
price - $10
no sale
We have no room for it, and none of our rooms has a theme this would fit into.

Wee pool table
price - free
no sale
I can see if a boy had a doll house this would be perfect. We have a hard enough time finding room for useful things or things that can be resold.

latch-hook piece
price - tag flipped over, can't tell
no sale
This is cheery and well done. However it looks too much like Precious Moments figurines, and I have an alergy to those.

Humpty Dumpty nic nac
price - $4
no sale
Janie thought he was dumb looking (which is a compliment in our household and often gets something a place on our shelves). He creeped me out, and if either of us objects to something, we don't get it.

Wood end table
price - $3
no sale
We have no room for it.

Sewing cabinet (without sewing machine)
price - $6(!)
no sale
we have no room for it, and I can't get it back out West for resale. This would bring $70 or more at auction, but the cargo it would displace would sell for a whole lot more.

old drill
price - $4
no sale
I already have two, but liked the looks of this one. The key, I find, to getting great 50s and 60s power tools is to look at the cord. If the cord is in great shape, it probably wasn't used much.

CD rack
price - $4
no sale
I wanted this. I was going to cut off the corners so it could turn in a tighter space and use it for all my spices. But CD racks are abundant, and as a matter of principle, I wasn't going to pay more than a buck.

bikes
price - $5 to $40 (for the banana seat in the front)
no sale
Just the sight of these made me happy, so I got all I needed for free.

naked people
price - didn't ask
no sale
Piles of naked people are creepy.

The rest of the items were not of interest to me either.
What happened to Barbie's clothes? Perhaps she belonged to a nudist colony.
I think the whole baby einstein deal is stupid. The parents who use these DVD's as a babysitter are the ones who screw up the kids. Not those of us who watch with our child and teach them at the same time. My son never watched baby einstein. But he does watch Dora and Diego (no more than 1 hour per day, max) and I watch with him and quiz him on what he's learned. He's 2 1/2 years old. He can read, count to 20, knows all his colors and shapes, knows the alphabet and the sounds the letters make, and has a massively impressive vocabulary, including about 20-30 words in Spanish.
Sorry to get off subject, the baby einsteins videos just reminded me of this.
That trunk looked pretty cool, though, but I probably would have tried to get it cheaper.
I love the trunk - wonder if it could be painted a different color.
The end table for $3 was nice too. I could see stripping it and refinishing it. Probably would be nice. It looks old.
Can't wait for the followup article on what you did buy.
Sarina, the trunk was all wood and metal bands. If I had rooms where I could use it for storage without having it out in view, I would have bought it too.
Thank you Jennifer for your ditto on egg people.
Kelly, we might have bought the bird, but it was almost as much as, well, a 10-gallon Redwing crock : )
Jill, I agree. Parenting is a full-time job, and no music or videos are a substitute for hands on learning with mom and dad.
Thank you Nana. Jane can have as much fun as anyone I've ever known.
The end table was reasonably old, yes. The trunk could probably be repainted, but I'm not one to fix up things. It either looks perfect or it looks good enough. The stuff we bought is officially posted!
Shannon, the trunk was just another of those great things out there for those willing to walk and talk to people and have a good time . . .
This season alone I've taken three pictures of naked Barbies. I guess people don't think kids would get the wrong idea. As a parent, I think I'd be a little more prudish.
I wanted the rack, Sue, but it was a matter of principle.
Thank you, Teresa. I like being able to take pictures. It makes it easier to physically leave some things behind, and for the annoying things it makes them easier to bear.
