This past week I have been extremely busy with the opening of school and all that entails as well as taking care of my Mom and as a result have had little time to Gather or to take walks with Tuck. By Wenesday, I was feeling a little bit housebound and was yearning to be outside in my forest. My brother-in-law Duffy was on the schedule to be Mom's caretaker for the evening and so when I came home from school, I gathered Tuck and we went on a hike. Before we even hit the tall sand hill leading into the forest, we were joined by Sophia, my independent feline. I think Sophia was feeling a little bit like she had been abandoned over the past few days because I was no longer sleeping with her in my bed. For the most part, I was at Mom's sleeping in her loft, listening for her voice at night. So to my surprise, Sophia decided to join Tuck and I on our walk.

I couldn't help but notice the differences between my two companions. Whereas Tuck walks with me or runs up the trail....Sophia does neither one.....no trail will she follow...a true Lewis and Clark, she is forging her own trail over tree limbs and under green ferns.

I commented to Papa later in the evening that I was thinking of writing a photo-essay on the differences I detected between my two hiking companions and titling it "The Differences Between a Male and a Female"...he just scoffed at me and said I would get a lot of nasty comments for didn't the President of Harvard just get his walking papers for having similiar thoughts. So I'm going to let you decide...come stroll with us and see what you think??

Sophia's attention is drawn towards a hole at the base of a tree...she stops to investigate.

Oh my, a hornet's nest. "Come on Sophia, I don't think you want to mess with them!"

Incredible light shines upon Sophia in this picture. Can you see her?

Tuck wonders where that "wandering feline" is?!

Both Tuck and I are a wee bit concerned when we don't see Sophia for awhile. Has she gotten herself lost, we wonder. To our relief, we find her taking a rest on the forest floor.

Soon, she decides it's time for a bath. Tuck is dismayed with this turn of events. Whoever heard of taking a bath when your out hiking?

Patiently, Tuck lays down nearby.

Bored to tears and quite disgusted with our hiking companion, Tuck decides to take out his frustrations on his fleas!

Enough is enough and he gets up and implores Sophie to forget about her grooming and come hike once again.

Back on the trail, we head home.

Near the top of the hill, just before the sand pit, Sophia is once again, missing in action. Tuck goes back and finds her resting once again....she's not ready to leave the forest so green.

This is her forest....and for now, she's content to stay a little while longer and so Tuck and I leave for home.

whenever Jersey & I went for a walk, Catagain would always follow.... we were in the city then, and people would call and point, telling me that "You have a cat following you!" Some people would get quite worked up about it, actually!
Yes, sandra, now that my boys are grown and on their own, these are my companions...they keep me company as I stroll the woods.
I love cats. They're more my style.
Perle...then I am sure you would enjoy my Sophia...she definitely has a mind of her own. She loves...but on her terms!
I thought my daughter was the only one who went hiking with a dog and a cat. But, her cat tends to walk underneath or ride on her St. Bernard.
Thanks for inviting me to go along on this walk in the woods...
..
U wishing you laughter
Thanks for the photos and story, Elizabeth!
jessie, I really do think your right...not about female vs. male but about the differences between a cat and a dog!! Tuck does love his kitties...though he has the hardest time understanding them! He really is quite gentle with them and they run all over him.
Vicky, is Homeward Bound the movie created from Incredible Journey....or are they the same theme...just one is a later version. I remember reading the book Incredible Journey...and I might have seen one of the movies...been so long, I really don't know which one. Anyone help out.
Terri...that's exactly what I was thinking. Tuck was excited about the trail...galloping ahead, returning to check on us and then forging ahead...just like a man; whereas, destination was not at all what Sophia was thinking....she was out "experiencing" the world and taking her time. Watching Tuck wait for Sophia to bathe reminded me of Papa when I take him shopping. He usually finds a seat outside and waits for me.
Marge...Tuck is just an incredible friend to the kitties...he doesn't quite understand them...but he truly loves them. When he hears them meowing for food or they want to get out, he comes running to me to get my ass in gear.
Marian...thanks for dropping by and taking the Sunday stroll with us. I will be sure to tell Sophia your wonderful compliment.
What a wonderful adventure. I'm glad I could share in it.
Your task was to carry the camera and take the photos. There's to star in front of the camera. LOL
Ten stars from me!
Lovely fun to trail along with the three of you Bob. Spotting the kitty became quite a where's wally experience there. I'm definitely a cat person and Sophie is a pearler!
A 20....that would be fabulous Lyla.
I love animals and it was so sweet to see your Sophia deciding to join you and Tuck for a jaunt. And it was equally sweet to hear Tuck went back to check on Sophia. Now, I would be nothing but astounded to hear Sophia went back to check on Tuck. That would be rather un-catlike!
Thanks for taking me along.
Kathryn...Othello and Sophia are woodland/bog kitties. They spend a good part of their days wandering. Ophelia, on the other hand, stays close to home. Usually she can be found on the steamer chair or the stone wall.
