I have to admit that I rented "Astronaut Farmer" with considerable reluctance. I detest "farce" comedy and I was afraid this would be something that Charlie Sheen or Adam Sandler would put out. But, I was glad I did.
I have grown to detest the phrase "family values," not because I do not cherish my family or that I believe that we should do what we can economically and politically to strengthen the family -- but most of the politicians running off at the mouth about "family values" are just using it as a cover for rightwing bigotry. But this movie, really does hit the mark about what it means to be a family.
There is of course some fairly velvet hammer pokes at our society, and some not so velvety punches at the current fearmongering that is being used as a political tool these days. But, the pokes are sufficiently non-partisan that they should not be considered offensive.
The movie is just good clean fun. And deserves a two-thumbs up!
