They way I knew my husband was "the one" -- he's the first person I was ever able to truly be myself around.

I opted for what I wanted instead of what I deserved. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. ;)

My wife and I have been together almost 9 years. Out of all that time, through cancer, being poor.. *cough* STILL being poor. We have argued maybe... five times? I doubt any higher.. we are best friends.. Lovers.. It's truly a romantic sappy marriage that I love every minute of.. With out her I think I would waste away to nothing.. ok.. didn't want this comment to turn in to a sappy poem..

Wow, some very nice responses here. I love your description of your marriage Timothy. And Sarah. Sandra I hear you. Respect. And also to be heard, listened to, and someone who wants to be listened to and heard. To be myself and to be loved for that. To be the "one' for him. I do think that it has to come naturally or not at all. I have had what Brett talks about and it never was good. I can imagine just standing at the book store, and saying one of the off beat things that I tend to say, and to have someone near my age and single and cute (to me) laugh. And to have a comeback that is equally bizarre, but I understand. That to me is the beginning of a burgeoning friendship that could grow to a lasting and strong love. I also took a break, for way too long. I feel ready now to try again. Now I just have to stop hiding out in my bedroom, from the world!

I am fortunate enough to have the mate I deserve. This wonderful man brings me coffee in bed every morning, tells me how much he adores me constantly, and would do absolutely anything I ask of him. He still opens the door for me wherever we go; he's the consummate gentleman. I wish I could clone him...

I would like someone who speaks proper English, who is at least semi-literate, who knows where to put periods in a sentence, who knows which words should be capitalized, who doesn't insert 'like' into every sentence. Do you know any such people in this country?

I do not ask for much!

The truth is I have the 'perfect' man for me!
I became disabled shortly after we were married. We were not even married a year!
My husband has the perfect job for us, fire captain, so he works 24 hours then is off 72! That is tremendous for us. Then God gave him the 'complusive' (dare, I say) need for cleanliness. Things in order, laundry a perfect way, no dust ... so on and so forth. His stress reliever is landscaping our yard. So all the chores are covered. He is a fireman so he has the 'cooking bug' and enjoys experimenting what he has had at the fire station on us (We have 2 sons). It is fun and we eat well.

Can I ask for more? I do what I can and I live with limitations and chronic, total nerve pain throughout my body. He is happy with me taking short walks, drives and 'resting' together. That to me is the perfect mate, when the chips fall they jump in without complaint and make sure life goes on smoothly.

I am married now, but when I was single I struggled & I prayed to God to send me someone that treated me like a princess, wanted to be with me all the time, and someone to just love me...see my article How I Met My Husband... ;o) God played a HUGE part in my finding my soul mate! ;o) Oh & sometimes you really get what you pray for LOL My husband never let me out of his sight except when I went to work ROFL! ;o)

I have to second that emotion. God gave me my husband, too. I told God crazy stuff.
"...and Lord, I want him to be a Leo, with blue eyes and tall. It's okay if he has one kid. But more than anything else I want him to love You." (Okay, that part wasn't crazy.) And I want him to have sexy hands..." And so forth and so on. I really got nitpicky with it.
But three months later, I met my husband. He was everything I had asked for and more. And the funny thing was I had quit looking. I had told God I was going to quit looking until he sent me the right one. And I did. And there he was.
We're still together 26 years later.
