OBL seems to know a lot about our politics and understands it. This transcript is indeed frightening, especially as it does seem as though our left leaners are starting to sound like him. Of course he would want a Dem to be elected. He wants Americans on his side so that he can't fail in his destruction of America. The bad thing is, I'm more afraid of the Americans who sound like OBL than OBL himself.

Actually he could watch the news from a cave, or someplace with a high density mineral deposit that would hamper satillite scanns. With the development of portable generators over 2 decades ago, and the established support from those hiding him, it is not that far out of the question. He could watch recorded CDs, or even have some sort of satillite reception fed to him.
And this has been observed for a few years now, by watching interviews from other supporters of OBL and how they word their statements, echoing the far left. It has even been pointed out for a few years now, that the far lefts actions and words are feeding and supporting OBL, his group, and others like him. This just makes it more than an obvious observation.

OK, I have to say the entire premise of this is disturbing to me. I am by no means a left wing liberal but to compare them to a terrorist is about as wrong as it gets. Just because someone points out salient points made by someone who is evil doesn't mean that they're ready to throw in their lot with the evil speaker. In just about every posting or speech from a terrorist leader, you will hear accurate and salient points. To lead that many people based on your personal appeal, you can't always be 100% wrong. America is in part to blame for the rise of Al Qaeda because we funded bin Laden when he was fighting the Soviets and we knowingly gave them more resources than they were using to fight the Soviets. We also sent billions to the Taliban before 9/11 which means we helped to fund the attacks. Like it or not those are facts. Our international policies of the last 60 years have often bitten us in the butt and will continue to do so until we figure out that national change needs to come from within a nation or it will not last. Every time we prop up a foreign government that oppresses their people, we will give fodder to those who form terrorist organizations.

As far as the liberals who constantly say that America supported Bin Laden in Afghanistan in the cold war that is historically ridiculous and not factual. They supported the leader of the Mujaheddin who admittedly Bin Laden and many other Middle East Muslims came to help in the name of Allah. The Middle easterners were asked to leave and most did after the Soviets retreated. The mujaheddin was run out of power by the Taliban because we stopped supporting them. The Taliban, who embraced Al Qaeda's ideology, welcomed Osama Back after Clinton refused to take Osama when he was offered up by Saudi Arabia. The rest is history.

All of this occurred under Clintons watch.

Clinton was not offered OBL by the Saudis as was proven beyond the shadow of a doubt when we repeatedly quoted proof from the Republican 9/11 Commission Report on this forum. The Sudanese had offered to detain him and hand him over to the Saudis or us in 1996 and Clinton said no.

Osama bin Laden was mentioned by name in Oliver North's testimony for the Iran Contra hearings including discussions with he and other leaders of the Mujaheddin in Afghanistan about the fact that they were stockpiling our weapons because they knew we would abandon Afghanistan as soon as the Soviets were gone which is precisely what the Reagan and Bush administrations did. Granted Bill Clinton for some unknown reason chose not to pursue capture of bin Laden when he could have but that does not negate the infrastructure to build Al Qaeda being handed to the Mujaheddin by the Reagan administration. Check your scorecards, the leaders of the Mujaheddin and the leaders of Al Qaeda, lot of the same folks.

Troy actually the claim that Oliver North named bin laden personally was a lie. The statement I think you are referring to came during a question posed by Al Gore and the real name given was shrugged off by Gore as if it was a kook theory.

Got to give it to you on the North testimony. Had not seen it refuted until I looked it up on Snopes. Got to admit I heard it enough times from enough sources that I never bothered to check the transcripts personally. Although from the bio I was able to find on bin Laden it seems that as early as 1980 he was meeting with our CIA and Pakistan's ISI to recruit for the Mujaheddin. He along with the ISI and CIA also was involved with building the tunnels we chased him into in 2001. Obviously the CIA denies direct ties but they denied direct ties to Noriega until they were outed too and denied allowing Castro to overthrow Bautista until the smoking gun ended up out in the open. So you have to take the word of the CIA with a grain of salt. Abdullah Azzam I believe is the person you refer to and their relationship was a mentor student relationship as I understand it. Being that most of the factual information on a lot of this stuff is classified to this day it is sketchy at best but we do know that the Mujaheddin was greatly supported by the organization that would later become al Qaeda and that the leaders of the international muslim support groups within the Mujaheddin would later be the leaders of al Qaeda. Since Regan funneled funds into Afghanistan along with weapons and training for the fighters, it stands to reason that he is at least partly to blame for the strength of the organization. Since Bush Sr.'s foreign policy was mostly an extension of the Reagan policy, their lack of action to stifle al Qaeda is as much to blame for the strength of the organization as Clinton was for not going after bin Laden. That's how I see it anyway.

My thought is that there is plenty of blame to go around on the al Qaeda front and us being tied down in a war in Iraq is distracting us from dismantling al Qaeda. They had virtually no presence in Iraq prior to 2001. Saddam never would have allowed an organization that posed that big of a threat to his power to exist in his country. He would have killed them all to keep his power intact. The history of al Qaeda suggests they would have worked to overthrow Saddam because he was not a Caliphate leader and would be seen as illegitimate by any fundamentalist jihadist organization.

I agree with your point, MDP, that OBL is using typical leftist rhetoric. He's trying to appeal to a large, self-destructive demographic in "open" (read as liberal) societies like ours. It's a strange tactic, but it could divide us further, if the left doesn't wake up. I don't see that happening, so we have to beat them politically.

Obviously, we are doing that now, if OBL is chiding the Dems for not fulfilling their promise to get us out of Iraq. Iraq's not part of the war on Al Queda, in the Dem's playbook. The surge strategy has also squeezed the Dems into some tough spots.

Amazing. At the end of the day it seems like whether you're on the far right or the far left, all the arguments really come down to name calling and half truths about the other side. No strength of your own positions, just pointing out the flaws of others. All of it is as hateful and intolerant as its opposition. How will the world ever survive with people who can't even have a civil conversation in charge?

Folks, as much as you would like to blame the other side for the ills of our world, we are all to blame in some measure. Whether its the person who doesn't vote or the person who preaches ignorance and hatred or the person who just "doesn't have the time to get involved" but can tell you every detail of their favorite sports teams and tv shows, we all share some measure of responsiblity for the failings of our leaders. Whether by action or inaction, we have allowed the world to unfold in the way it has. Osama bin Laden is just a symptom of a greater disease the human race is suffering from. Our own greed, mistrust, hatred, intolerance, lust for that which belongs to others and every other human failing is what gives rise to evil men of power. Everyone wants the quick fix or the easy answer. "Just kill the terrorists and everything will be good." Why? It didn't work with communism. The USSR is gone but yet we still find that enemies abound in the world. The domino theory didn't quite go the way we thought it would did it? Communist China still alive and well as is North Korea and others. Perhaps there is no magic bullet for making the world like us. Maybe there shouldn't be. Perhaps the American model is only good for those who choose it of their own free will. Maybe our democracy works for us because we had to throw off the rule of England to get it on our own. Maybe we need to let the rest of the world find the freedom that works for them on their own too. Maybe we can offer advice without it coming from the end of an M-16. Then again maybe we do need to rule the world with one model for society. Maybe that is the only way to have lasting peace. Since I'm not a psychic I don't know but I do know that likely nobody in the extreme left or right in this country knows what's best for the entire world either.
