Community split on arming police
Fear and uncertainty dominated Thursday's forum on whether to arm the UI police - fear of a shooting rampage on campus, fear by police they will confront an armed and dangerous felon, and uncertainty over whether university cops will be able to control their guns. "The problem with provisional arming is that it's only good if you know you're going to face that danger," said Charles Green, the assistant vice president for the UI police, noting that the UI is the only school of its size in the nation whose police patrol unarmed.
