An Insider's Pocket Guide to Montreal Part 1 - East End - Photo Essay

Every year, we go to Montreal. I used to live in Montreal, as a matter of fact - graduated high school and went to college and grad school in Montreal. Got my start in newspapers there, so I am reallly INTO Montreal.

These days, we  stay in a neighborhood called The Plateau, which roughly comprises the area north and East of McGill University. We stay in a small but cozy bed and breakfast on Rue Laval E. (Laval Street East), which means it is east of the East-West dividing street, St. Laurent, also called The Main.

As you can see from the photos, Montreal offers a lot of French and European old-world charm not often found in North American cities.

This is a bed and breakfast on the corner of Rue Laval Est and Rue Napoleon. Laval street has several bed and breakfast hotels; they are all part of an established network in Montreal.

This is not our bed and breakfast, but is one similar to where we stay.

Montreal's east end has always been comprised of mostly French neighbhorhoods, with many architectural features you won't find anywhere else.

 http://media-files.gather.com/images/d972/d334/d744/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg

This is a house on Rue Laval Est. Colorfully painted houses such as this one are very common.

This type of winding staircase is found only on the East End of Montreal. It is one of many unique architectural features Montreal offers. This one is on Rue Laval Est.

This charming house is located on the corner of Rue Laval Est and Rue Duluth Nord.

It is so refreshing for the tourist or resident to walk among these streets, as they offer a glimpse of a world rarely seen in North America - that of a truly unique world not dominated by sameness and corporate chains.

 http://media-files.gather.com/images/d982/d334/d744/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg

This house is a few blocks east of Rue Laval Est on Rue Henri Julien Est.

You can see how seriously the Quebecois take their notion of artistry - artistic endeavors are regarded seriously in all aspects of life.

This painting is on the outside of a wall of a nautical shop on Rue St. Denis Est, a few blocks east of Laval street. As we travel a few blocks, you will begin to see more of the old world and French flavor found in Montreal's east end.

 http://media-files.gather.com/images/d986/d334/d744/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg
This charming storefront is of a Bohemian market, located on Rue St. Denis Est.

St. Denis a famous for its shops, cafes and nightlife.

  http://media-files.gather.com/images/d987/d334/d744/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg
This is the Second Cup coffeehouse, a Canadian chain and Leah Christianson's favorite, when she was in Ontario. Yes, Montreal boasts a gazillion outdoor cafes.

This one is on St. Denis street, but most we saw were in Montreal's west end. The coffee house we frequented most often (not Starbucks!) was the Cafe Depot, a 24-hour chain of gourmet coffee, gateaux (cakes) and sandwiches.

 http://media-files.gather.com/images/d990/d334/d744/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg

Here, the old world achitectural charm is combioned with contemporary traffic in this storefront on Rue St. Denis East.

 http://media-files.gather.com/images/d997/d334/d744/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg

This is the pedestrian Mall on Rue Duluth Nord, a street that runs perpendicular to Laval. Duluth is in both the East and West ends of Montreal. This pedestrian mall was begun some years ago and is one of several in Montreal. Few cars are allowed.

The red truck is the Canadian Poste mail truck.  These pedestrian malls are one of many features that renders Montreal so appealing to tourists.

 http://media-files.gather.com/images/d0/d335/d744/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg

Continuing our trek in the East End, we are now on Rue St. Laurent Street, the divding street between East and West ends of Montreal. Rue St. Laurent (St. Laurence Street) is 0 East and 0 West.  Rue St. Laurent has long been a street with shops from around the world.

Here in La Vieille Europe (Old Europe), customers can buy cheese, chocolate, meats, sausages, soups, coffees, breads from all over Europe. Ghiradelli chocolate is imported to Montreal from San Francisco.

Poles love to buy poppyseed cake and packaged Barsc soups here, as well as Dutch, Swiss, German and Polish chocolate bars.

It is a delight to shop in La Vieille Europe and smell the aroma of freshly ground coffee, top quality chocolate and hear Sarah McLachlan over the sound system. Frequent visitors to this store will hear many languages spoken.

The image “http://media-files.gather.com/images/d102/d356/d744/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Rue St. Laurent is also the place to buy your Montreal Smoked Meat at Schwartz' deli, a famous deli for many West End Montrealers. Montreal Smoked Meat is the Montreal equivalent of Corned Beef, except that it is smoked, not corned.  Celine Dion's chain of Nickel Restaurants are a good place to eat Montreal Smoked Meat sandwiches.

 http://media-files.gather.com/images/d5/d335/d744/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg
This is the pedestrian mall on Rue Prince Arthur Est. This mall was the first pedestrian mall in Montreal, begun nearly 30 years ago. Rue Prince Arthur extends from the west end near McGill University to Carre St. Louis, (St. Louis Square), a small park. Many shops and cafes adorn Prince Arthur.

 http://media-files.gather.com/images/d14/d335/d744/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg

Continuing our trek in the East End, this is the Mazurka Restaurant on Rue Prince Arthur Est. This Polish restaurant has been famous in Montreal for more than 30 years and is staffed entirely of native Poles.

We used to enjoy the cuisine a great deal in years past, but in recent years, we have found the food not as good as we had remembered it.

Nevertheless, the Barsc was excellent.

The society of Polish war veterans in honor of Marshall Pilsudski. This placard was on a building on Rue Prince Arthur Est.

Montreal is home to many resident of Polish descent, like Toronto, Chicago, Buffalo, NY and New York City.

 http://media-files.gather.com/images/d27/d335/d744/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg

Looking westward from Rue Duluth Nord in the east end, visitors can easily see the cross on Mt Royal, the mountain for which Montreal is named. Jacques Cartier conquered New France for his country in 1535. Originally, Montreal was a trading fort named Hochelaga before being known as Villa Maria, then later incporated as the city of Montreal.

The image “http://media-files.gather.com/images/d100/d356/d744/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

The cross is lit at night with white bulbs. In decades past, the cross was lit with red bulbs during lent. Though sometims difficullt to see in the city center, visitors coming in by car, bus, train or plane can easily see the cross from a great distance.

Carre St. Louis - St. Louis Square, is a small park on Rue Laval Est and Prince Arthur Nord, in the East End. Poets and would be poets, artistes of all types, young and old, gather here day and night. This was taken at night after we lit sparklers and drank wine.

Years ago, as a would be poet daydreaming about Rimbaud and Baudelaire with long-haired friends, this park held a magical spot in my heart. It still does.

Notre Dame Cathedral in Vieux Montreal (Old Montreal). The exterior is a replica of the Notre Dame in Paris; the interior yield a glorious display not found in old world Gothic cathedrals. There is no charge for persons attending Mass, but there is a charge to visit and walk around the church.

Taken on the West End, from the Summit at Mount Royal, here we are looking East at the Olympic Stadium, 1976, Montreal Olympics. That was an exciting time to be in Montreal, with thousands of tourists worldwide coming into the city. We saw several track and field events at the stadium.  Oh and yes, Restaurant prices were jacked up for the duration of the Olympics; they never retreated after that.

 http://media-files.gather.com/images/d146/d356/d744/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg

We have nearly completed a mini tour of the East End. We are now technically West of St. Laurent, on St. Urbain Street, near where Montreal author Mordecai Richler grew up and wrote about his growing up in St. Urban's Horsemen and also in The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz (Moe Wilensky's cafe here was featured in the movie of the same name starring Richard Dreyfuss). This neighborhood then and now is an Orthodox neighborhood of Montreal.

 http://media-files.gather.com/images/d149/d356/d744/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg

Not far from Moe's is the Original Fairmount Bagel Bakery, where people line up day or night from Montreal, New York or Toronto, to get water-bagels, fresh from an open-flame oven, dipped in water and then covered in sesame seeds. The bagels are bigger, doughier, sweeter - this old world recipe is world famous and uses a flour with more gluten, somewhat like the famous New York Pretzel. The New York Times had a recipe for the Montreal Water Bagsl some years back. That is a true honor!

Beautiful pictures and nice captions to go along. I've missed my many chances at visiting Montreal. I was once even tempted to pursue my master's up north. But I guess there's still time in the future.

lovely tour especially for me as you know I am from montreal, but do not frequent the east end,

I am a west end girl.

Although I did work on st. Dominique street at the corner of prince author once, so I know that area but not laval street.

also montreal is world famous for smoke meat considered a better quality than corn beef and people from all over the world come for it,

the same with our bagels, again world famous.

have you tried, crepes, tortiere and poutine?

I wish I could vote twice.

Your pictures remind me of my favorite city, New Orleans. Is Montreal younger than NO?
It looks a lot cleaner.

What a fabulous photo-essay, Kathryn...the images so crisp like the place itself. Have only been to Montreal once in my life...and that was in the early 60's ....it does appear that Papa and I should venture north next summer and take in the sights, sounds and smells of the East End...looks like a "walking city" to me! Love the colors of the artistic houses.

I've spent a lot of time in Quebec. Mtrl is nice. Good food, beautiful girls and nice scenery. We usually take a run up Mt Royal and take a look about from there.
If you like Montreal - you would also like Quebec City. (but dress warmly)

I enjoyed the tour very much. I have spent a couple of weeks in Quebec before, and found it to be a beautiful place as well. I especially loved St. Anne's Cathedral, and the nearby waterfalls. During the early eighties I launched a Jack-up oil drilling rig which was built there for our company (Global Marine Drilling) into the St. Lawerence River, and I then rode it over to the North Sea for drilling operations set up. My wife and I really loved it there.

It's been a lifetime since I have visited Montreal in person. If memory serves me I was somewhere between eight and eleven. And now 35 years later your picturesque essay makes we want to go again. I remembered very little is what your photo essay has taught me. I will go again. I will fine the right lady and we will walk the streets of Monteal. Oui, avec une dame sur mon bras! Beautiful Essay.

Montreal is such a beautiful place - we moved there in 1968 and I left 10 years later, but have returned probably more than 40 times to visit.

It is a timeless city, where the 60s never left.

Quebec is lovely, too - have been there several times - winter and summer. A photo essay in the works, there, too.

Excellent pictures, Kathryn. Brings back so many memories.

I went with a woman in Montreal for a year and flew up from Boston every weekend. Ran the trails on Mont Royal every day I ws there. Love that town!

I also ran in the first Montreal Marathon where I garnered considerable distinction in the international athletic community by beating a 91 year-old man by 20 minutes.

La Baie - I worked there once while it was still Morgan's. La Baie is a great department store - I hope you can still get Hudson's Bay Point Blankets there. I imagine they are available, somewhere.

This essay did just what it was supposed to do, it made me want to pack my bags and get there as fast as I can! As always you pictures really tell a story. I love the gingerbread trimmed buildings, and all the yummy food options. I found Carol's comment interesting...how she is "west side" and doesn't go to the "east side." Is there really that kind of split in the city, where people who live there don't cross sides? Interesting...

Well done, great photo essay! You make me want to get in the car and make a beeline for La Vieille Europe, with a stop at Schwartzes! We do a lot of our shopping in Montreal as it's only a few hours from where I live. My grown kids love going there and we almost always make the journey when they are home. We usually start by walking up and down St Laurent and then stray east.

You are so right that Montreal is somewhat frozen in the 1960s and I like it that way.

This was a fabulous job, Kathyrn. The pictures tell the story, and your captions make it three dimensional. I am really intrigued to see Montreal now. You included so much information and such an intimate look. To see the skyline one might never suspect the hidden beauty you've shared. Thanks - looking forward to part 2.

That does it! The next trip we plan is going to be to Montreal. Your photographs are enticing and the captions make me want to buy my tickets now. Great job of showing us how to put together a photo travel essay that rivals any seen in a travel magazine.

Those homes were lovely and I NEVER knew where THe Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz was written till now. If you hadn't stated where this was, I would have sworn it was some European village.

Kathryn, you are to be complimented on your artistry in putting this article together for us.
Your photography is simply breathtaking, colorful and grande composition.

I lived in Buffalo for a number of years and never made a trip to Toronto or Montreal. SHAME ON ME !! I will send this to my son living in Germany who is married to a Live Free or Die New Hampshirian . I am sure they will make plans for an immediate trip to Montreal as soon as they get back to New Hampshire.

I can't wait to see the next part. I also wish I would have learned French somewhat so I could feel comfortable there.

Thank you so very much for taking the time to develop this article and sharing it with us.

Most native Montrealers now speak English. You will still find occasionally find people who do not speak much English, but, unlike 30 or 40 years ago, most people do speak enough English to help tourists.

Mahvelous photo essay Kathryn! I love Montreal and you
took me through most of the places I've been already! The
store fronts are still the same and I was there many, many
years ago. My friend and I walked up the pathway to see
that Cross and I was overwhelmed by the magnificent view!
These pictures bring back some great memories Kathryn and
I thank you for that! When I went to Montreal I arrived when
it was night time and driving into the city, the lights were very
bright and colorful I'd never seen anything quite like that! My
daughter Michelle went to Montreal with her son an his class
mates. They got to go inside the Olympic Stadium and she took
some really fantastic pictures too. Kathryn you have so many
wonderful pictures of Montreal and I thank you once more for
sharing these with us here on Gather! Your captions were great!

Beautiful! I've been recently thinking of going to Canada for my honeymoon (I'm deciding between a couple places) and this makes me lean towards Canada even more! It is so beautiful. I know I'm on the wrong side but I lived in Washington State almost all my life and have never been but once when I was to young to really remember. Shame on me! When and if I move back I'm making the trip, even if it's not Montreal!!!

Lovely pictures Kathryn. I especially liked the brightly painted houses. My sister and I visited Montreal for Expo '67 and again for the 1976 Olympics. That time, we took the Canadian train from Vancouver to Montreal (along with hundreds of other people headed for the Olympics). It was a fantastic trip and we loved Montreal.

Kathryn your photos were fantastic and I found the bright colors very charming. In some ways it reminds me of the styling found in the Caribbean though the hues are different, the intensity is the same. What really surprised me is the prevalence of outdoor cafes, what happens in the winter? This is most unique, for in general northern areas are not big cafe places. Sure they take over local squares with tables but they are not an "outdoor" culture.

Thanks for the tour :)

Dan, the best time to visit Montreal are between Memorial Day and Columbus Day - or before American Thanksgiving.

February is cold, dark and snowy - not a great time for an American tourist accustomed to living in warmer climes.

Kathryn, thank you. Though I feel rather homesick for the city of my birth now, I truly enjoyed your wonderful photographs and very accurate and complimentary descriptions of Montreal.

I was just wondering if you would mention Schwartz's when I got to the picture of it. Without a doubt it was the best place for smoked meat in Montreal when I was last there. I really have to go back sometime soon.

I liked parts of Montreal but I loved Quebec City, did you happen to make it over there at all? It is set up European style, with small clean tight shops beautiful hotels & chateau's. By the way, beautiful pictures & great article. Looks like you had a lot of fun!

The west coast of Canada is beautiful as well, lush and green. I really miss going to Vancouver!

At some point this fall, I will post photo Essays of NYC, Guatemala, Italy, Quebec.
