This IS a pivotal point.
When automakers shut down plants in Michigan, in order to move them to Mexico's cheaper labor markets, company profits went up while the Michigan economy sank.
Thousands of workers lost their incomes while thousands of stock holders with good and secure jobs enjoyed a rise in their dividends.
It is no surprise that the need for social programs rose; and everyone ranted, raved and railed against the increase in their tax burdens; especially those "benefiting" stock holders.
Now we have a related situation.
With manufacturing relocated or outsourced to other countries (again for the sake of higher profits; not just some profit) we have continuing high demand for social and community services; AND a rise in the need for medical services, thanks to the increased inherent danger in the products for sale on our shelves.
These dangers effect most those who can only afford low cost items, those who can only afford (or not afford) medical insurance, those who hang by economic threads; people who are generally NOT stock holders.
Where as the American rich were getting richer by unemploying their fellow Americans, they are now getting richer by allowing the poor and middle classes to be poisoned with the substandard production methods and materials practiced and found in certain foreign countries.
Face it; The American Rich Don't Care about the little dots they see scurrying around in their country. They care only about Themselves, Their status and Their well being. No one else's.
The New American Way!!

Bill's Spirit is an Artist, Writer, Poet, Philosopher currently wordsmithing from a humble forge in small town Ohio.
The works of the man behind Bill's Spirit have been published in small alternative and amateur presses since 1986. Before that, they just filled notebooks, took up space on walls and gathered dust in piles and boxes.

Thanks for sharing.
Things are being allowed to go wrong through apathy, complacency, and ignorance.
Many of our best and brightest are getting killed over in Iraq as part of this same process; if they were more aware, taught to question the status quo, there would be fewer lambs to that slaughter.
"They" are also complacent, apathetic, and ignorant. "They" are insulated from facts just as much as They are insulated from the hardships. They don't see it: it isn't in the news, and it certainly isn't reflected in their TV shows about Idols, Talent, and Fashion.
We need some ideas on how to wake Them up. Give them a chance to set things right -- many will, I believe, when/if they see the full scope of the situation. They are smart enough to know that when the boat capsizes, even the folks in First Class get wet. Let's find a way to connect Them back to reality.
Right now you sound like you want a Flood like Noah saw, but the next is supposed to be Fire. I'd like to give folks a chance to get out of the house before it burns down.
Olga M. - From my studies of history and my own lifetime experiences this thing does seem to fluctuate from not so bad to godawful. We need to get it to swing back toward the not so bad end, and try to build enough momentum in the process to make it swing beyond not so bad and get closer to the benifecent good that it could be.
I am not praying for a flood, nor do I want Armagedon to come in anyone's lifetime. I do wish that you hadn't mentioned Fire. I'm still shivering a little over the recent news that our armed forces accidentally flew six nuclear warheads across the nation.
Ineptness seems like it might be part of the trickle down theory. From the Commander on down.
Scary...
Maywood Bedard - Well and poignantly said. Thanks.
Joanne Huspeck - I'm sure some people did think of it beforehand; but they probably weren't listened to. On the other thing, it's obviously not so good down there for their commoners.
