Do You Own a Dog? and NOT walk your dog?

I own two Keeshonds and I walk them every night.

Do you have a dog?

Do you WALK your dog every night/day?

 

If not, WHY NOT?

If you were a dog, cooped up in a yard, or worse, a pen, all day, wouldn't YOU want someone to take you out for a long walk? So you could poop and pee to your heart's content? Hmmm?

 

I think anyone that owns a dog and does not walk them daily is not doing their job as OWNER.

I've owned my dog for many long years. I don't walk him because last week his left eye was finally removed (he got in a fight with a much bigger dog).

I rarely walked him since then because he hates other dogs, and most people. Walking a dog= sharing space with others.

He has free reign of the house and yard though. No bigger dogs in there.

Alena - I'll let you off the hook for not walking your CAT! I love cats also. But most folks do not walk them - the cats walk everyone!

David - I can understand you not walking poor one-eye. I hurt just thinking about his injury! but did you walk him before that? Apparently since he was out when he was attacked. Doesn't it piss you off when other dogs are loose and attack yours? I go ape shit over that!

Oops I'm getting out of hand...
My dog, Ashes is 11 years old and 14 lbs. He is deaf and blind. He hates to even leave the house to go into the very large back yard. I have to force him out. He was hurt in a break-in of my home, and has gotten worse since then.
Oh, forgot to mention. I adopted him a year ago, and he wouldn't leave the yard when I got him, so he's never been walked by me.

I don't have a dog right now but when I get one [hopefully within the next few months], I will be taking it for walks!!

I have two boxers, and right now we don't walk them daily, because it is extremely hot in Florida right now. But that's only a few months when it's unbarable, and the rest of the year we do. When it's hot out though, we let them play in the yard, wcich is really big because it's actually 3 lots. We also take them to the park, and walk them through the trails, which are heavily shaded, and to the doggie beach for a nuce swim. So, even though for a few months while it's really hot we don't walk them everyday, they still have plenty of fun, and exercise!!

I have two ollierotts and a border collie. I don't walk them. They are all indoor dogs, they have free run of the house because they are good girls and don't get into stuff. They have a large back yard that they run in three times a day. That's where they do their business, and play. It is safe because I keep it that way. I never walk my dogs although they are leash trained. I don't walk them because people are such shits about dogs walking on their property and the area I live in does not have sidewalks. My pet peeve with the city.
I have a dog and do not walk him. He's a very furry breed and does not tolerate the heat (I'm in the South) too well. He has a large fenced in yard and is given free run of both the home and the yard. He's not complaining about not being walked so I don't think we have a problem here.

Katie that's another very good point. It has been over 100 degrees everday for a month here with no rain. My girls are also very furry and two are solid black, they do not tolerate heat. In fact they only desire play time in the evening when I let them run. I have a fenced in yard and they are safe and secure in their own envirnoment.

We don't have any dogs yet. We are thinking about it in the future though. The kids are two little yet to have that responsiblity.

Your dogs sound like they are well taken care of and happy. Long-haired or not - they are doing just fine with YOU!!

Monica - it's good to give the kids responsibility but for doggie's sake, YOU have to make sure he/she is in good condition and happy. Giving responsibility IS A responsibility - especially when pets are concerned.
Tom:

Best thing for a dog in my experience: Country life. What I mean by that is they are free to roam and explore, run around as they please.

I not only play with my puppy outside for hours in the evening, I also take her for long walks every night (EXCEPT if it's POURING rain. Then she refuses to move and so I can't drag her and we'll call it a night and play inside instead.) My husband also takes her for a long walk before he goes to work in the afternoon, so she gets spoiled with two walks per day when the weather cooperates.

Neeetah - so right! Wide open spaces is the best plan for a dog. There ARE those small "lap-dogs" that people love (and I love them all) and they might be happy with a small house and no yard - but a DOG needs a YARD - the bigger the better!

I didn't walk my sheperd. I knew tha I couldn't control him if there was a problem. The vet said he was fine running in the yard. I tried to send him with my son but he only seemed happy when he was by my side. I got him as a pound puppy and we were best friends until he went away.

I don't have a dog for that very reason. I am busy, and they just seem like too much work and responsibility.

I grew up with dogs and we always took them for walks, every day. We're talking about adopting a rescue puppy in the next few weeks (!) and I plan on taking s/he for walks every day as well. I need the walks as much as the dog in my opinion :-) And to round out the family we have a cat who loves to go out for walks on a leash -- Sprocket loves to stroll around the yard and it gets some very interesting looks from passerbys :-)
