Random Thoughts about the Gather Video Promotion

Now that the Gather Video 25-point promotion is over, the Recent Videos page only shows 3 pages of videos in the last 24 hours. I remember the night of 8/31 before the promotion ended, there were 11 pages of videos.

Either way, this was a much smaller scale than the 10-point Gather Photo promotion back in June/July. There were more than 600 pages of photos uploaded within 24 hours, and I know someone made over $300 worth of gift cards from that promotion (how envious I am!).

I wonder why people didn't respond to this promotion as enthusiastically. Is it because of the bandwidth (too slow), or the equipment (don't have a camcorder)?

I also wonder how much extra money people made from this promotion?

I didn't post any videos, and probably won't, because I'm just not that interested in creating any. I don't mind watching a few posted by my connections, but I am much more interested in articles and images.

I would like to create more creative and artistic videos, but I need a good program for my computer and since I have Vista, nothing works right with that! So maybe later I will post more videos when I get the right stuff.

I didn't join any of the video groups as with making comments on 200/300 posts a day I dont have the time needed to review videos it is just too time consuming. Basically they are home movies which have meaning to the person who publishes them. But at 63 yrs old I dont or have ever enjoyed home movies. Its something we all endure from time to time in our lifetimes because we care about those showing the flicks. I guess that says it all here. I am being honest.

I personally have no intention of posting any videos to gather. It concerns me that others can post them to their blogs and such. My videos are mine and they are private. I dont want someone taking it and doing....goodness knows what with it.

I think it was much easier to upload a photo. And after the video promotion came out many people were having problems posting anything to the site. I believe there are still some with problems. This was after the upgrade. Also many people don't have the capability to make videos. I'm lucky that my camera has that function. There was also a lot of people who were against the whole idea to begin with.
No way of making a video and my computer is too slow and old to even view one!

If people want to post videos, that's their decision. I posted a few myself just to get the 25 points. But my beef with the promo was the rule-change mid-promo. It was completely unfair to start off the promo with no length requirements and then arbitrarily implement a 30-second rule. I was happy when some of us whined and complained enough to reduce that length rule to 20 seconds, but it sucks when Gather can't play fairly with their own promotions.

A lot of peole don't have the equiptment, or very old computers, plus the videos had to be AT LEAST thirty seconds long to count, so for all the ten second video clips people posted, they didn't count anyway. I only posted three, becuase I wanted them to be at least a minute long, and have interesting content, and it's hard to come across stuff to video tape all the time. The three I did post aren't that great either. The first one I received the hundred points for, because I did it the first hour the site was back up with video!!

Sherry, I agree that it was unfair that they changed the rules mid-promo, but THANK GOODNESS, the ten second video clips of 'nothing', are a waste of time, and so many people were posting these tiny clips, with nothing happening in them over and over again. I don't mind a short clip, but there has to be something going on in it...your child sleeping doesn't make for good video, especially after the tenth video of it!! You didn't take crappy pictures of nothing during the photo promo, why would you take crappy video then? Just to get points??

Holly - yup, to get points. But that's one of the reasons that just about anyone bothers to take advantage of these promos, and Gather knows that. They bait users with attractive offers. I agree 100% that they should have set minimum requirements, but they should've done it BEFORE the promo started rather than changing the rules mid-stream. It reflects very poorly on them.

Im just not a video fan... I do You Tube but to be honest I prefer stuff like what's on YouTube as opposed to seeing someones kids in the yard or something. I mean it's great to share with family and close friends but come on... does anyone really want to see home videos any more now than they did years ago after vacations? LOL

I joined Gather as it was first and foremost a writer's forum with a little photography on the side. I continue to use it as such. For those who want video let them go to youtube. - R

There's nothing wrong with video.
Video is great and future generations are going to be blessed by us recording everything.

It's just, in my opinion, Gather is ssuppose to be a writer's forum. In my opinion.
(maybe others agree, maybe not)

I barely knew about it. I found out considered what (if any) videos I had to share and had a loss of a pet, loss of a PC and a vacation.

Now that I'm back I see it's all done and over. Oh well. I really didn't have much that I would have found of merit to share, so at least for that.

After I tried 10+ times to post a little >10 sec vid, I gave up...there was no way I could have uploaded a 30 sec one LOL!!

Well, I don't have a digital camcorder, so I can only record video from my camera - which means no sound. Or, I can use my phone, but that has a 15 second limit on video. I don't have any money for fancy video-editing software, and honestly, the freeware/shareware stuff out there is extremely limited. So, until the price comes down more, I'll just be doing pictures.
