Apparently, according to unemployment, it's much preferable to do nothing rather than to go back to school. Because Aus is going back to school, when he filed for unemployment last week (they make you file weekly to claim your benefits) they flagged it as having to be reviewed, because circumstances changed. They said that if he didn't hear back from them within a week, he should contact them. Well, a week went by. We sent the contact thing. Called. The person he needs to talk to won't be back in the office until September 11, but if he wants to try and wrangle it out of someone else, he can call on Tuesday (labor day means no one in the office until then).
Of course, on September fourth, Wal-Mart gets to try and screw him out of previously paid unemployment again. Even though the last time they did this, they didn't bother to show up at the hearing- because they're a big company, that's perfectly allowable (if the individual doesn't show up though, then the company automatically wins) and they got to refile. So who knows what'll happen with that?
Then Aus got a letter in the mail today saying that his unemployment claim will be reviewed, because he 'may be going to state approved job training' (Gee, do you think? Like he told them oh, about a week ago?). Bear in mind that the payment for this training COMES from a state agency, the Department of Vocational Rehab. So when are they going to review it? Why, September 19th, of course. Why not leave us without benefits for another two weeks?
Never mind that we're out of money, and scraping change together to get gas at this point. That we have not a cent left in the bank. Let's just screw around with the claim for three weeks total, because circumstances changed and Aus is going back to school through a state mandated program. Oh noes. This is definitely something that must take three weeks to check out - except, unless, if they like.. picked up a phone and called the agency in question? Or looked it up in a computer? Then it'd take about ten minutes tops.
Thank you government, for once again proving why you are a model of inefficiency, and out to screw the poor people out of what little resources they actually have.
Anyone know a quick way to make some money out of nothing?

It would be so wonderful if we had employment offices in our state governments rather than unemployment ones. In Europe, the government offers retraining in jobs needed by businesses for free rather than the hodge podge free for all that exsists here. There is little concern for actually finding gainful employment for people searching for work or skills retraining to help full needed positions that will produce more income tax revenue for the state. Its just the typical bureaucratic make it to payday doing as little as possible mentality that permeates our governments.
I pray for you guys. I know how hard it is. I went through it. I found help with churches. They are the most giving and caring people. My family wasn't treated like losers, we were treated with respect, and they gave us a hand when we needed it. They did not even ask us to become part of the church. Not forceful, but truly giving from the heart, and the sake of being a good group of people. Some churches even have job/career boards that have listings of openings (that are posted from current parish members).
Keep your head up, and know it is a blessing that you and Aus are together and love one another to see each other through this.
Take care, and I know you guys can make it through this as long as you two are supportive and strong together.
As far as the money thing goes, my only advice for quick money is to have a yard sale. We can usually make between $150-$300 that way. You can sell any nicer conditioned clothes at consignment stores (they take a while to pay sometimes, though.) Other than that, I don't have any real suggestions. Good luck to you guys though. You're in our thoughts and prayers! Try to stay positive. I know it sounds tough, but it could really help!
My T-Shirt,
upon which is written "been there, done that".
My unemp bene's terminated at the end of July, when they were supposed to end on 30 SEP. I pulled together all my spare change - including what had been reserved for the laundromat - just to put 2 gallons of gas into the car to make some mandatory cross-town trips.
If you have an Aldi's grocery store in town, use it. Make a shopping list first, though, and don't expect to find nationally-advertised brands there.
Do not expect to find sense in governmental units. For the most part, they exist to perpetuate themselves, not necessarily to help clients.
My wife has been in a nursing home 24 x 7 since late 2004. The best and quickest way for me to get benefits for her, since we've spent all of our liquid assets, is for us to get a divorce. What's up with that? We're married 36 years and now we're supposed to get a divorce just so she has zero assets and can become immediately eligible??
Ree-dick-ell-mowse!
I feel your pain Laura, I really do.
Jeff K.
I pretty much ditto Bobbie's sentiments and yours. Yes, you did "nail it".
"God Bless America" and He will. It's got to get better, because . . . dare I say it?
It cannot -- it seems -- get any worse.
Thank you, Laura.
My husband and I just had to take out a loan to pay for some car repairs. Stupid me didn't have full-coverage insurance. (Smart me does now!) Now I'm looking for a part-time job to help cover the new monthly payment.
My prayers are with you. Keep looking up. God will bless you.
And Jeff - that's just awful! I would never say that I'm glad you've been here - but it is comforting to know that we aren't the only ones in such a situation.
I'm sorry to hear about your wife and that they expect you to get a divorce for her to get benefits - what is wrong with this place we live sometimes? It just makes me so mad that we can't take better care of our citizens and each other when we are in need.
Laura - I am sorry that you are going through this. Have you considered working for a temp agency? It's possible to get some income coming in rather quickly that way. What kind of work do you want? It just seems that there has to be a way out of this.
I am sorry I can't think of no way to help you. This is one of the most awful things I've read. This is exactly why people don't want to change this status and better themselves because the government does stupid things like this. I wish you luck. Your husband is doing a great thing and being punished for it. I hope things have cleared up by now.
