Some of you might have heard of Betty Cotton. She published a book with a technique called "cotton theory" in which she quilts pieces first, and then sews them together. Also, you can make the two sides distinctively different by using this technique.
I had a couple of classes last fall on her technique, and worked on finishing the projects just this week. Here's one of the projects:

you don't have to use embroidery for the center, you can use another patterned fabric instead, but the class I was in was also showing off how to use embroidery in projects.
