Cotton Theory Project

Some of you might have heard of Betty Cotton.  She published a book with a technique called "cotton theory" in which she quilts pieces first, and then sews them together.  Also, you can make the two sides distinctively different by using this technique. 

I had a couple of classes last fall on her technique, and worked on finishing the projects just this week.   Here's one of the projects:

you don't have to use embroidery for the center, you can use another patterned fabric instead, but the class I was in was also showing off how to use embroidery in projects.

Gosh. Mary, each time I think you have done the best I have seen, you show me something new, this is fantastic, and I know that embroidery had to take a long time, I am so darned old, I remember doing and learning all this stuff, but it was great fun, there were times, when we couldn't afford store bought things and I embroideried table clothes and napkins, did lots of hankies, too, there was a time before kleenex, lol,but I so admire the things you do, wonderful hard work, but you make it look so rewarding.

You have a very nice piece! I find it hard to tell the size tho, maybe place mat, or is it a wall hanging? Lovely work, I think I'll look to see is she has a web site. I love the colors you've chosen, I know, however, that sometimes the colors change when posted. So, my question: is the embroydery done in redwork? Even if not, it's very pretty! Thanks!

Debi - cool plate! The embroidery is actually a variegated thread, with dark reds and violets. It is a place mat size. I'll probably use it for one of my tables. Have you seen Betty Cotton's work before? We have an excellent Sewing Expo that comes here to Kansas City every year (see www.sewingexpo.com) and there is usually a Cotton class. There are several cities that host the expo: Chantilly, VA; Tampa, FL; Chicago, IL; Atlanta, GA; Cleveland, OH; Worcester, MA; Minneapolis, MN; and K.C.
