Earlier in the summer, I read several good books, including the latest Delillo novel and another book I reviewed here. Now it seems like I've run into a string of mediocre books that have left me indifferent about finishing them. Have you read any good books lately you'd recommend? I'm off to the library later today to try to stock up with some books worth finishing!

My reading tastes run through so many genres. I don't read the stuff book clubs are made of--I'm not a member of Oprah's reading elite, and at the library I browse aisles until books scream at me to take out.
For fun reading I enjoy most any novel that takes place in D.C. I enjoyed Margaret Truman's Mysteries and Marilyn Qualye's--I'm obviousley bi-partisan--
I just finished "A Year of Pleasures" about a new widow who had been devoted to her husband and he to her--the story is how she made a new life for herself. I found it hard to believe two people could be so devoted to each other and he could be so ultra wonderful--but that often happens when one partner dies. The husband who drove his wife nuts in life, becomes a sainted one in death.
I'm sorry--all you wanted was suggestions of some good books to read--Yesterday I started "The Traveler's Gift" by Andy Andrews. It's seven decisions that determine personal success.
Hope you find something that you completely enjoy reading and will recommend it to your Gather friends like me.

Here is a new book about people from your neck of the woods -- namely Emerson, Thoreau, Hawthorne, Louisa May Alcott and Margaret Fuller -- "American Bloomsbury," by Susan Cheever. I will be writing a review when I have a few minutes.
Right now I am re-reading "Mountains Beyond Mountains" by Tracy Kidder, an exceptional story of Dr. Paul Farmer that takes readers from Harvard to Haiti, Peru, Cuba and Russia and proves that "the only real nation is humanity."
So many books ... so little time ...
Janet Evanovich's books do not stay on the shelf either.
Other than that, I can only really help if you're into Young Adult books - but ask if your local library has access to Novelist. It's a great resource for finding stuff you'll want to read!
Detailed history of the constitutional convention. Excellent read.
I also greatly enjoyed Devil in the White City by Eric Larsen which is non-fiction that is written in a style that makes you think it is a novel. It is a very interesting look at Chicago during the World's Fair and a serial killer in the area at the same time. I hope to be able to read some of his other books in the near future because I really enjoyed his style.
BTW, I have read Kite Runner and am waiting to get the new one--I get most of my books from the library so it could be a long wait! And Mountains Beyond Mountains is a great book Lisa!
P. S Thanks for commenting on my article about book blurbs.
I also agree with Wendy S. above - the Outlander series is great!
Dante's The Divine Comedy is also really good. It's a classic, and very well written and a good read overall.
I've always liked The Sea Wolf by Jack London. It's an older book and written...well, like an older fashion...but overall I thought it was a great book.
Not sure if any of these are your sort of book, but good luck finding a good one. ^_^
My son Tom sent me a first printing "It Can't Happen Here" by Sinclair Lewis. I could not put it down except to nourish my body and sleep for a night or two. It is worth your reading even if it was published in 1935. Now having said that, I had to follow the novel up with a healthy dose of humor and spice.
