Welcome to my neck of the woods; Wombats XXIII by Wendy C.

Thank you for inviting me to host this round of romping Wombats. It's a long weekend and it's been a long week for our contestants, as well as the group.

No talk of contests, pests or blockages... everything else is free game so to speak.

Welcome to Lake Cour'd Alene. This slice of heaven is not far from where I live. The Resort has graciously found us a block of rooms with breathtaking views of the lake. There is shopping, hiking, fishing, and nature until it is running out of your ears.

Up the street from the Resort is a little restaurant, it doesn't look like much, but WOW. Might I suggest the Alder smoked salmon.. most excellent, with one of the local wines.

Beaver and Moose abound so be careful out there. The Cows are very protective of their young. The big bulls shouldn't give you much trouble this time of year, but do keep your distance. Cougar and bear are in the higher elevations. Do stay alert at the huckleberry bushes, bears don't share happily.

We have moose patrolling the perimeter, beavers at the back water.. looks safe to me.

I've got hammocks slung between the ponderosa pines. There's always a cool breeze off the lake.  Kick back and enjoy the final week of summer wombats.

Good Morning everyone. There's coffee on and breakfast is cooking. I hope no one is too sun burned from our wonderful island adventure.

Vivian it was truely the best three hour tour ever.

Judi the new notebook and you coming to an understanding?

Dale, when is the new baby coming home?

I'll be away for a bit. Enjoy yourselves.

I'm here and I'm calling squatter's rights to the hammock closest to the lake. We do have internet, yes? Then I'm good.

Do we have otter around here? They're my favorite animal - ever since I read The True Story of Okee the Otter back in 6th grade. I bought it at the book fair and STILL HAVE IT!!! Which is a good thing b/c on half.com it's something like $27 dollars. My copy is worn, falling apart, but very much loved. To the point that I'm scared to let my child read it. Which would be why I was researching on half.com. I may have to cave and threaten loss of limb for any tears to the pages.

Do we have muffins? I could use a muffin. I'm baking that apple pie later. Just after I read this FC entry...

Alright I want the hammock the cougar won't find. Or the bear, or any large predator for that matter.

I just got back from moving friends. Looks like it's going to be a quiet weekend.

There are muffins next to the coffee. Have never heard of river otters here, but who knows.

The cougars are staying up high because there's lots to eat up there. No worries, if you see one just make lots of noise and DON'T RUN.. we'll come help you in the noise making...it will go away.

I finished reading entries yesterday.. YIPPEE!! ahem, sorry I forgot myself for a moment. I'm taking a hammock for an hour or so.

I talked to the Capt, we can have an evening cruise around the lake.. it is sooo pretty out there at night.

I just finished digging a bunch of holes- still nothing, but the 3 Otter Pops I just consumed have cooled me down significantly.

Off to read more entries and then maybe make some chocolate chip cookies.

**Have you all written something from the other sex's point of view- not just a scene or two, but an entire piece? If so how do you know when you get it right? The one I thinking is a male lead and I'm grappling with POV. Clues?

Most of my novels are from a male POV, Vivian. I was especially concerned when I wrote a scene about the male lead in my science fiction novel losing his virginity. I had a bunch of men read it and tell me if I had the thoughts, feelings, reactions correct. "Spot on," they said. Just ask a man to read it for you. That's what I've done in the past. I always like my male characters better than my females. For instance, I liked writing about Nash better than Maralee and I think that might show in my writing.

Oh, this one made me cry folks: Beyond the Shadow of Fear

Okay, Judi, what's this "Wombat banter" group? Is this a faux wombat meeting place, or the double secret wombat hideout? You're the only authentic 'bat I saw on the guest list there.

Sad, JK. So sad. I notice most of the front runners have high SP to RP ratios. Judi and I excepted of course. (-;

Have a great baby visit, Dale. That's the best part of being a grandparent (I guess), you don't have the 2am feedings. You just have the cuddle, kissy, play, go home part.
There is a difference between JB and impo-nuts, JB had connections, 13 year old connections, but still, connections.

Thank you for providing such a gorgeous setting! With the noise we generally make, I have no fear of the wildlife. Couldn't be any more wild than our lives! Not reading any more WTF entries, because then I'll just get myself in more trouble. We're here on high ground now, and I'm staying on high ground.

Judi and Ken, if I'm not mistaken, Marty's comment went poof (or maybe I missed it). Ken, you now look like you were talking to the voices in your head. Go look, and delete as necessary.

OK, off to post what I wrote offline last night, and continue through my 'please read' requests. I've given up on getting through all entries. I'm like Jamie, I'm spending an hour on them, and that's too much.

Dale, a couple of baby gifts from the Wombats:

The Muddle Headed Wombat is Very Bad

Swim Little Wombat Swim (from Judi, of course)

Wombat Toy

You know what is the saddest part about it Jamie is that they have nothing better to do. Wow! Am I the only one seeing a flashing "LOSER" right now.

Thanks for the tips Jamie about the male POV- just seems a bit weird to try and put myself in a male form- I can't even imagine what the body does let alone feels like. I think wisdom may dictate a three person narration.

This whole contest experience is starting to leave an icky feeling- does it wash off?

Lacey took a Holiday
Nice read so far as I was concerned.
So to treat myself, I'm reading the Joy Luck Club. My son is reading it for school...he's thrilled (NOT!) giggle, I'm liking it though.

Grandchildren are God's way of thanking us for not eating our young. Tongue firmly in cheek. broad smile.

I think I've read a three person narration in this contest, Vivian. LOL!

Is it the smoozing when you don't mean it that gives the icky feeling, or being screwed by the overly competitive me me me club?

It's Saturday night, lonely, friendless losers are sitting in front of their computers (not us, we have friends!) and are deciding the only way to get ahead is to tear someone else down. Jamie, if they're hitting all yoru articles outside the contest, then it's an attack on you. Or more likely, a concerted attack on wombats. Every single thing I have got hit, and I'm not in the contest. Fortunately, I never look at ratings, so I'd never notice if they went down. Only if there were comments to go with it. It's likely it's that piece of ABC gum that has gotten stuck to our shoes. Ken, you really must stop baiting it. Just stop poking it and let it revert to it's natural gelatinous state. Again, sorry for drawing its ire to the wombats.

Vivian, I nearly choked on my burger when I read "three person narration." You could do that, but then Ellora's Cave or Samhain would be your target publisher!

OK, more reading. Still working my way through the wombat love list. Since that thread has gotten mucked up, I may revise and repost next week, with entries from new, bona fide wombats. Gotta support and encourage the noobs! ;)

The icky feeling does go away. After many mai tais, rum and cokes, zinfandels, Sam Adams, etc. Oh, and three weeks post-contest. Sorry. that's the minimum time.

Yes, Marty has disappeared. Wish I'd bookmarked him/her. wonder if it was the fact that I think I know who it is. The woods must be talking.

I'm still trying to get through the ones on my entry also. Jamie, the one you recommended was the one I was talking about in my email about the BQS. I really liked that one also.

The false oowws and auuhhs got me too. Whatever floats your boat I suppose.

If I said I liked it then I did. "If you don't got sumpin nice to say; don't say sumpin at all." Call me silly, it has served me well. Well, unless you've made me mad, then I can get catty.

Pat, having read all of the g. muck, do you believe the author put the kind of time into his revision process that the rest of us do before we share with anyone? I mean anyone, even a near and dear family member or our best critic-friend. That's the thing that is most disturbing, the idea that some people have that it comes out of their fingertips as pure gold and never needs to be edited at all.

No worries, Pat. I find the childish attack quite humorous. My feelings are not hurt. Wipe the gum off, stick it a cow's behind. There, that's better.

The third person would be the author with numerous intrusions. And the POV shifts. I feel seasick sometimes.

I've found some good stuff in here though. I'm giving out entirely too many tens, more than I thought I would, but if the stuff's good, it gets a ten. I'm not petty or jealous. And I've gone to a method of if I ain't given it a 10, I give it nothing. I do leave comments though. Try to be nice comments. I'm bad at this stuff. If anyone finds a comment of mine that seems out of line, point me in its direction. I'll try to soften the blow even more. I'm using a stuffed pink hammer though folks. I don't know if I can get any softer.

Congrats Ian! I have handed out no votes so far. I'm keeping my spreadsheet with notes and preliminary scores, and at the end, I'll hand out 25 tens, and say so. As for the rest, I may or may not deliver the preliminary scores. So many are zeros.

Beth, thanks for the recommendation on Trust Me. Folks, if you haven't read it yet, do so. It meets every qualification as a real romance, and does so extremely well. It has a painfully low vote count, as the author doesn't know how to rock the vote. This one is worth whatever help we can provide.

I just got my first positively had to be a '1' DB1 of the contest. There may have been others earlier, but this was a definite. Meaningless, of course. I wonder if the person handing these things out understands that Gather can know where they are coming from. If they're coming from a contestant in this small of a contest it would probably be easy enough for Gather to just find out where they are coming from and DQ the contestant. Probably not worth the bother in this case, since the non-10 scores are meaningless anyway and anyone stupid enough to waste their time going around giving DB1s is unlikely to have a story with even a remote chance of winning.

I'm going through a lot of entries tonight. I'm actually checking comments to see if the contestant is out there reading and commenting before I read the entry. If they haven't commented on anybody else, I'm just making a note of it and going on to the next entry. If they are out there commenting, I go ahead and read, comment and rate.

Does that make any sense? Why should I spend time reading their stuff, when they aren't out there reading and commenting too? I'll get to the non-commenting contestants if I have time after I've read everybody else, and I'll give 10s there if I have any left out of the 25 I'm going to give out.

On the home front: I'm a little down because the ladies want to make this a ladies only night. So I'm doing First Chapters while they visit Alissa Sara. Part of the reason was that we needed someone here to make sure my aunt got her pills tonight. Oh well. I feel a little left-out, but I understand. I'm sure we'll be over again this weekend.

Welcome back Ken! This is a wonderful time of year to visit, the weather is good, not too many bugs... lots of wombats.

I grew up in North Dakota. If you sniff and your nose sticks shut; it's cold. It rarely gets that cold here. The weather in the San Francisco bay area suited me better, but there are way too many people. Much better population wise, here.

Congratulations Ian! Nothing like finishing to create a nice warm glow.

Smores anyone? We'll have to crowd around the grill. There's a burn ban in effect.

Wouldn't do to have the wombats known as the Gather group that torched Lake Cour'd Alene.

I haven't any idea how many 10s I handed out.. not too many I don't think. I didn't realise just what a picky reader I was until I started this journey.

Wendy, wouldn't be the first time we burned someplace down! I started out in FC1 as a naive, innocent reader, trying to be nice to everyone. Clearly, I've changed. I blame the wombats for opening my eyes to the differences. I'm pickier now, too. I'm finding myself also put off by the authors commenting excessively. A gracious thank you now and again is fine; if every third comment is the author, not so much. Ran into that tonight. OK, off to read more requests from the Wombat love article. I owe them that much.

You guys, I've been away for awhile, and I just don't know what to say. I'm just sitting here, wanting to contribute to the group, and I don't mean this to be unkind. I think Dale touches base with us generously here, and I may be reading you all the wrong way, but it seems sometimes there's more excitement here than what is true. I know the First Chapters contest is exciting, and I think we just need some space here to do our own thing and come back to each other with more respect than this. We've gone this long together, that we want things to formulate between us, but we make false exclamation (and a few don't). It's just that this avoids having a real connection with each other, and if that's what we want, we should maybe try to make new steps toward that. Honestly, my parents and I live together, but we've also lived with the TV, and talking just doesn't happen for us often or anytime, actually, so I know how this is. I think we need to drop the false fronts, unless everyone is comfortable gaming each other, but I think Lisa has started a great thing here. We owe it to each other to get to know each other.

S'mores, but I'm kinda picky. I don't like black bits on my marshmallow, ick! And bring on the chocolate, could definitely use some of that.

Dale I think that's horrible- shouldn't leave anyone out on an occasion like this- here have my first perfectly browned marshmallow. Sorry :(

And I would very much LOVE a s'mores. I'll be getting my keyboard all sticky, but oh well!

Pat- we seem to be visiting the same entries tonight. LOL! I'm not stalking you, honest. These entrants have been making the rounds and contributing positively to the contest so they deserve to be noticed. In a good way.

Never mind Jamie, found it! Breathing great gusts of relief.

And it's somehow worse for the editing! I'm going to comment on Stacy C.'s entry before the end of the contest, just as a reward for ballsy commenting.

Stacy C is on my list. Was before the ballsy comment. Gets auto props afterwards.

Ian- Feel free to share whatever is on your mind. The contest is on most of our minds is all. Bound to be this way for another 2 weeks, at least. But that doesn't mean you have to get involved if you don't want to.

Ian, nearly everyone is living through the strain of FCR, and if people are a bit too giddy, and some of us are sillier than normal, please don't hold that against us. You can always up the level of intercourse by introducing a more elevated topic.

For example: has anyone tried using dark chocolate on their smores?

Ian, I'm curious as to how you think we're presenting false fronts with one another. I'm actually more my real self here among people I've come to think of as friends, than I am with many of my co-workers. We support each other in a positive way, we encourage one another as writers and as people, we come here to celebrate one another's successes (including yours, at finishing your novel) and we cry with and for one another when sorrow enters our lives. I think we're very real. I don't think we "game" one another. Many of us share even more in private offline emails. Just curious about what's on your mind tonight.

Viv if you don't like black bits, keep your marshmallow stick away from the edge of the Weber, it's old and black bits abound. (We really do have a 20+yr old Weber kettle)

Chocolate is on the way.

What would you like to know Ian? I get where you are coming from. I had to invade my kid's space when they became teens to know what they cared about, why and what they thought. Otherwise everyone went to their corner of the house, it was sad.

Family dinners helped bridge the gap. They'd fallen to the wayside when I worked..when I came back home.. so did dinner at the table. The howling subsided after a few months.

Dinner conversation please. What was the best thing that happened to you today?

You know, Pat, it's probably just that I can't understand a person's mind by the written word all the time. It's a little crazy reading some comments on other pages, and I guess that habit of reading someone the wrong way (not knowing their mind) comes here whenever I'm reading excitement, which is what I would call a false front.

Dale, I think it's appropriate that you're turning your commenting efforts toward contestants who have reviewed other's stories. I still remember (less than fondly) someone from FC1 who begged, pleaded and whined for comments/votes, but didn't appear to vote or comment on anyone else's entry. Ugh.

You know, I've also got Isa in my name, the rune of ice, so breaking the ice might be in order for me sometimes, I'm quite sure. I mean, I live on a farm, and I just get to thinking too much sometimes. Wendy, the best thing that happened today was that I was able to have coffee today with no trouble. Actually, the best thing that happened today was a phone call from a good friend of mine, who I've known for seven and a half years, since my time in Chicago. I care about him as much as I care about my mom.

I'm so glad the DB1s don't actually count in this round. In FC1, that made me nuts. Nuts, I tell ya! Now it's only irritating, as opposed to truly damaging.

I'd also advise Jamie to back away from refresh, but I can't. If I were a contestant, I'd be hitting refresh every few seconds. I know this from experience. My mouse finger had a blister in FC1.

Ian we are all suffering from way too much attention to FCR and not enough sleep. I know I am sleep deprived right now, but do I put down the computer and crawl into bed- No. We are just wound a bit tight right now.

That said- the nicest thing that happened to me today was after a chat with my daughter about why she was hanging at her friends house and not bringing them over- I got a trio today, camped on the sofa watching CSI recorded episodes. Yeah! I miss it when they don't hang here.

You all know way more about me than most people. Honestly, no one in my house knew I wrote one ms, have finished 1/4 of the next and a couple of short stories. I just told my daughter this evening while sucking down some fish tacos. She was shocked- you wrote a book? Yes, I am a closet writer.

Jamie, but don't you think getting excited about well, let's say talking to each other, is setting yourself up for disappointment when you miss it? What I think is real may not be so, but it's a matter of perception, too. I respect you. But you might not have known that if I wouldn't have said it, and what comes of that could go as far as hatred for me. That's what I perceive with people a lot of the time, and I worry a lot.

This thread got a couple Jamie, though I don't know when. I usually don't look at the ratings. Probably, he who shall not be named. I'm ignoring that part on purpose, lalalalalala. grin.

Ian, I like the goofiness. It's a good outlet for me. I find people who share the same wacky imagination, and it's great. If you were all really here, I'd have the grill going for s'mores, coffee on the pot and blankets for everyone who forgot coats... it's who I am.

Oh, oh before I forget again. (this really does tickle me) I got a bite on my honest appraisal request. She sent it in an email. I think she was afraid I didn't 'really' want what I asked for. There were some really good pointers, and things to think on.

For those of you who haven't quite figured me out yet; I say what I mean, mean what I say and I try not to say it mean. I missed the hidden agenda day in life training, not good at it at all. Maybe that's why people have continually told me I've got brass balls. hmm

How's the fire for the s'mores holding up? Does anyone need anything?

In fact prior to my daughter I had told only one other person. She is a good friend, but that's it.

Ian hate is a REALLY strong emotion, one that I haven't felt for anyone in over 20 years. Personally, being relatively new here, I don't feel I know you that well so it is hard for me to have an automatic repartee with you. Two introverts have a hard time together. Now Judi on the other hand is a wild extrovert and very easy to interact with, some things take time. It's not always easy or quick to find common ground, but we all have it.

Vivian, you really represent a type of wombat when you say you're a closet writer. I think that's great. Are you a quiet type? I'm usually quiet. And there are reasons I haven't told too many people about my novel. For one thing, I like having a private life, and my way of not telling too many people (at first I was used to telling people, for the reason of having nothing much more to say that I could think of) was a way of preparing to keep a private life.

Most of the people I know here in Spokane don't know I write. I don't talk about that much outside family, friends and folks who understand.

Why is it people give you a look when you talk about writing? When I say anything about the process, it's as if I've sprouted a third head.

Vivian, I guess growing up here in Nebraska, I'm used to knowing that some people genuinely hate each other. It could just be my perception, but some people can be nasty. A person's speech says a lot about what they are thinking about a person, and sometimes I see it as hate.

Ian I have to work very hard at being sociable- it is tiring, I mean physically exhausting. I have gotten very good at it. People often comment that they never would have suspected it. But, I can stay in a room alone with no TV and no radio, no computer for days.

When you're ready to share your work you will. Don't rush it. We're here. BTW I saw that you were interested in Astrology I think?? A friend had someone do the whole charting thing, but I have no clue what any of it means- apparently the reader(?), whatever you call the person who creates the chart was very curious about me after they did it. Seemed very unusual to them.

I actually find it far easier to be tranparent to people here. It took a long time, because in real life, I'm very often painfully shy. Don't laugh, it's true. I'm the one at cocktail parties, standing next to the food table, wondering how to strike up a conversation. I'm considered a very serious, frequently humorless, distant person. It's the shyness. In the professional sphere, it's best not to reveal one's true self. Doesn't lead to perceptions of professionalism or promotions, and the secrets you share with co-workers are the ones they use to stab you in the back when a position opens. I eat lunch alone (I usually go for a long drive with the top down on the car, weather permitting.) No girly confidences or giggling for me. Not many women in my profession anyway, and the rest of the women in the building are clerical level. Not good for a professional position to be seen dishing with the 'girls' at lunch.

So I welcome coming here. Where people are real, share my interests, laugh, and encourage me out of my shell.

Wendy, what is it about sitting around a fire at night that encourages confession? OK, pass me a marshmallow and shut me up.

I think many writers are natural introverts. Sitting alone (which I love too) is restful. Creating something while you do it is relaxing. That's why the promotion side of writing comes as such a rude and disconcerting awakening for so many writers, I think.

Wendy, writers were always considered dilettantes in my family, not a REAL profession. So to admit I dabble in it would be worse than saying I decide to carve a pentagram on my living room floor.

Another marshmallow and two doses of chocolate. BTW whoever asked about the dark chocolate- never done it, but I see potential :)

Ooops, forgot to answer the question. Something good that happened today. Layed out around the pool, devouring the lastest gothic romance by Eve Silver. His Dark Kiss. Feisty governess, brooding master, dark mansion, a history of governesses gone missing or dying, and something lurking in the dark tower. My guess is the wife isn't dead, she's insaaaaane! BWA HA HA HA!

Ooo. Now I've scared myself. More marshmallows please. In a confession of truly epic proportions, I'm no more a fan of chocolate than I am ice cream. Weird. I know. Do I have to give back my 'girl' membership card?

Gee Pat, I'm already chick-like deprived enough as it is, if I have to turn in a card for not eating a prerequisite amount of ice cream- I'm screwed.

BTW Pat, I was in Real Estate development- how about viewing a demo site in 3 inch heels with rats and refuse from gosh knows how many indigent people with the burly concrete lime burned construction guys? Yeah, being the only female is interesting. Can't dress like a man or you're a butch, oh, what you gonna do?

Ian: see if you can find a copy of the CD (not the DVD), at the library, perhaps. It's based on a novel called "Fosca" which I haven't read. (It's in Italian.) It's the story of a woman named Fosca, an invalid, who denies herself any hopefulness in life as a means of protecting herself from emotional pain. It's a beautiful, tragic story. And if you don't like Sondheim's music, you can just read the lyric sheet :-)

Vivian, I used to have all the weeks memorized. There are maybe 48 weeks in astrology, but I'm not certain. Along with that, there are 48 matching karmic paths that I formulated a manuscript from as a study of self.

My planets are:
Sun: Libra, Society, Individuation
Mercury: Scorpio, Intensity, Satisfaction
Venus: Leo, Leadership, Revelation
Mars: Scorpio, Charm, Innocence
Jupiter: Virgo, Literalist, ?
Saturn: Virgo/Libra, Beauty, Passion
Uranus: Scorpio, Charm, Innocence
Neptune: Sagittarius, Originator, Liberation
Pluto: Libra, Theater, Discovery

Pat, it's nice knowing you. I think you could really end up writing something.
