Meh…
CRAWFORD, Texas—Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has resigned, ending a months-long standoff with Republican and Democratic critics who called for his ouster over the Justice Department’s botched handling of FBI terror investigations and the firing of U.S. attorneys, officials said Monday.
The likely temporary replacement for Gonzales is Solicitor General Paul Clement, who would take over until a permanent replacement is found, according to a senior administration official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The Justice Department planned a news conference for 9:30 a.m. CST in Washington. President Bush was expected to discuss Gonzales’ departure at his Crawford, Texas, ranch., before leaving on a trip to western states.
Two administration officials said that Gonzales had submitted a resignation letter last Friday.
The left will claim another Bush administration scalp, but at this point that’s beating a dead horse. Bush’s approval numbers are low and aren’t coming up again. Plus, he’s out at the end of 2008 anyway.
The Democrats, for whatever reason, are still campaigning against Bush as though it mattered in the future. Which it doesn’t. Gonzalez is gone, but not much else is going to change.
Anyway, I heard that Sec. Chertoff from Homeland Security will be Gonzalez’s replacement. Make of that what you will. I’m not very excited about it one way or another.

You know you had a lot of Republicans calling for his resignation too not just liberals, democrats and so on. I for one hope that poor man can now go get some serious medical attention for what ever is calling his severe memory problems. As a matter of fact I am suspect. I mean with all these people who work for this administration not being able to recall so much stuff...at least Gonzales had an excuse....It was national Meth month...I am worried that their could be something in the water around there. Maybe the EPA should look into............do we still have an EPA. No I mean one with actual scientists?
You put your finger on it, Rob.
The Democrats will never be able to raise their approval rating higher than George Bush, if all they do is run against George Bush.
Perhaps they should contemplate the future of their own party.

Yeah, that was sarcasm. Bush immediately started ranting about Gonzalez "good name dragged through the mud" to show that nothing is changed, you still got a good old fashioned partisan thing goin' here as long as yours truly is president.
That's why it's boring. Because one loyal incompetent is out, and we will probably get a new loyal incompetent (Cherthoff) to replace him. How many months of this do I have to live through, again? Schiller may talk about the Dems picking on W, but from where I sit the problem he has now is the Republican Congressmen and Senators who do not want to run (and lose) on the Bush record. They are edging away from him, do you notice?
But, but...Rob Port says it's not Young Master Bush's fault. Tell us, Robbie, why is that Bush seems to have appointed so many incompetents and criminals?

William Belknap was impeached after resigning his positition, basically for
corruption.
So Rove or Gonzales DO NOT AVOID IMPEACHMENT by resigning.
However they most likely will avoid impeachment unless there is a
huge outcry of the American people for action to be taken because
politically the Republicans WILL NOT POLICE THEIR OWN for the
good of the country.
This is what most of my comment posts here are about... to try and recall history a bit to put the current drama, whatever it might be, into perspective. I can so distinctly remember the Watergate Hearings and the fervor with which various indicted or suspected people who served under Nixon cried foul at the press and Congress for behaving un-patriotically, with Nixon's seeking a higher moral ground by claiming he acted for the good of the country with his many speeches to escalate public fears with that era's hysteria over a dominoes effect.
I noticed how this weekend Bush attempted to re-spin the history of that hysteria (Vietnam) in a speech.
How often are we going to allow a president to keep fooling us?
Does Reagan and Iran-Contra ring a bell?
Here we have another yet another US AG, Meese, who, according to most analysts and from my own memory, no longer acted in the interest of the US population but as a friend to the president to protect him from the Iran Contra hearings... whose final report stated: The President was potentially exposed to charges of illegal conduct if he was knowledgeable of the shipment and had not reported it to Congress, under the requirements of the Arms Export Control Act (AECA) and in the absence of a Finding.... When Meese got answers in his inquiry that did not support his defense of the President, he apparently ignored them, as he did with Secretary of State George P. Shultz's revelation on November 22 that the President had told him that he had known of the HAWK shipment in advance. (http://www.fas.org/irp/offdocs/walsh/chap_31.htm).
In this case, President Reagan with Meese purportedly advising him legally either absolutely fell asleep in his first term as president or was the US president most responsible for arming the "Jihad" we now are experiencing in Afghanistan and even Iraq, costing us more dollars per day than almost any war in history, thousands of US casualties and hundreds of thousands of local lives and displacing forever millions of families who will generally only remember America as a big bully, become tomorrow's affective-disordered suicide terrorists.
There is one distinct chorus in this. They are Republicans. Now, why is that?
know much about Iran-Contra. They do not realize that the same
people are in the current administation or they do not care.
Everyone once in a while it pops into my head that these same
people were dealing with the same AMADHINEJAD back in 79-81,
selling them weapons and making deals with them.
It occurs to me now that boths sides are sure making lots more
money on oil with all this crisis and talk of war and WMD.
They are not just Republicans, they are a subset, the same subest
who every time they are elected make a mockery of the the so-called
true conservative values. Odd, huh?
been found that fragments them and moves them any which way and
it is unlikely they are going to get hip to it. If they did they would all
stand up and make a big change ... and when a real threat threat
stands up what makes you think it would not move to heavy violence,
think streets of Bagdhad? Little by little at first and not in steady
jerky pushes the Globalists are consolidating their power and
strategy. I'm just afraid all we are going to be able to do it to hope
they are not really dreadful because there is no way disorganized
mob can fight the American media/goverment/military anymore IMHO.
I've read several good treatises on a future tomorrow global society. Most seem to indicate that the world, if it is to survive humanity, will eventually necessarily have to give up any unilateral or even axis/allied power bases, with the deletion of the United Nations in favor of a one-human-on-Earth equals one vote type of parliamentary world government, where national boundaries and exclusive cultures become a thing of the past, and where really it is these huge megalopolises who differentiate various types of unique services and products to engender wealth in the local population.
The felons you talk about never left power, they have just lost the timidity of showing themselves these days, now they run for president, and then go hide for a while in the private sector and then come back to parade it to the people. I don't think we could vote them out if we had a 100% majority. They can get mercenaries to fight for them anytime, they have not collected trillions of dollars in all these games for nothing. The inly way would be to burn all money and then start over. I don't think that is going to happen.
I do not see any power sharing arrangement with anyone but those who demand it and can back up their demands ... hence the local population will always be deemed terrorists if they try ... and so what might the war on terror be easily morphed into?
And what is the point in having democracy unless it is to make people feel better about themselves. That is the new age ... the delude yourself in to feeling better age. ignorance is indeed strength.
Local population are only necessary for cheap labor and local "color", and I imagine that someone is thinking about how the Earth is overpopulated and something is going to need to be done about that. Do you imagine the worldwide population would be any help in solving that problem of voting on an acceptable solution .. then there is the nasty fact that any solution would have to be far ... like justice in the US is supposed to be and moving away from more and more in favor of treating people according to their wealth.
The US has tossed way their life, their country as far as I can see. We have been diluted by so many people who do not even have a clue, all they can see and react to are the subliminal messages so they try to act like good Republicans.
People have been lulled into such a dreamland they may never wake up.
It's about the pursuit of "rule of law," which republiCONs have completely lost sight of.
" Ron ... you got it right ... all these people are straight from Bush the first."
Actually, some of them sharpened their fangs and claws in the corrupt Nixon administration. Which just goes to show that you cannot let these rat bastards off the hook when you've got them cornered. Nixon should've served a lengthy prison sentence for what he did. Because of his pardon, the rest of his corrupt circle was allowed to drift back into positions of power.
In the mean time they have taken over everything else by "taxing" all of us through industry and now through government by deficit spending, it is easy to see that without some "pearl harbor" to wake them up, Americans will never see that their government is not their government anymore .... only if George Bush is not enough, this new Pearl Harbor is much less likely that 911 and there is not much to be done about it anyway. What would everyone agree on, or do?
Who knows what has happened along the way. But indications are there, and the large industries are where this comes from, just as in fascism in Europe.
