Smoking Policy on UI Campus

With the newly revised University smoking policy, smoking is prohibited on The University of Iowa campus in all buildings, parking ramps, enclosed parking facilities and vehicles owned or leased by the University, regardless of location.  For outdoors spaces, smoking is prohibited on University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics grounds and the University Health Sciences campus grounds.  The Field House is included in the Health Sciences campus for this purpose.  For all other University property, smoking is prohibited within a 25-foot perimeter of all buildings.  This includes parking ramps, enclosed parking facilities and athletic facilities.  Signs will be posted throughout campus on building entrances and exits, within parking ramps, and at targeted outdoor locations.

The University has adopted this policy because of its commitment to providing a healthy and supportive environment for faculty, staff, and students. Smoking is a major health risk in America today -- not only for smokers themselves, but for non-smokers via secondhand smoke.

All faculty, staff, students, and visitors are expected to comply with the University smoking policy.  Faculty, staff and students who violate the designated no smoking areas may be subject to disciplinary procedures to address compliance with University policy.  Faculty, staff and students who see visitors smoking in designated no-smoking areas are asked to respectfully inform them of the smoking policy.

For students, faculty, and staff who would like assistance in quitting smoking, the University offers a number of cost-free programs.
