Six years ago, we bought a 6 cyl. Dodge Van. At that time, gas wasn't the issue it is today. We have dogs that like to ride, plus we wanted something with room to carry things, which our Saturn didn't have. Also the Saturn was a standard shift, and neither of us were comfortable any longer using it, due to my leg surgery, and DH's health problems. Moving to a rural area means the need to haul things around more. In the end it was a very good decision, because without the van I couldn't get my DH around, since he is now in a wheelchair.

'98 Silverado. The larger of the 1500s. I have a farm. I also want to move across country, and a good truck would be the best way to do it. I luv my truck. I don't get to take many trips because of gas costs, but when I do, I am might appreciative.

I drive a full size pick up, V-8. With a few mechanical tricks, I get 20 mpg city. Unless I stick my foot in the floorboard, then I get considerably less.

Why do I drive a big vehicle? I need it to pull my boat.

I have a 2002 Saturn SL2 in the shop now because it's a good car to tow behind an RV. Yes, I live in a Four Winds Class C RV.
My rental is a Hyundai Sonata. Nice car!

1999 Jeep Cheroke Sport. Because of hip and knee problems I need a vehicle that has a high, rather than a low entry.

Also my car was a very well maintained used car (a mechanic owned it - his other car is a beemer).

I had a Chrysler LeBaron convertible when gas prices started climbing above $2 a gallon. I got rid of my car 2 1/2 years ago and have not driven since. I either catch a ride with someone else, take the public transit bus or walk. I don't buy gasoline anymore.

Rob,

I know that you live in Central New York, is public transit that good there, because it sure sucks in the Capital District? Even the STAR transit for the disabled sucks. So much so, that I overcame my phobias about driving and am driving again.

I drive a 2000 Toyota Corolla which gets great gas mileage. I have to laugh at people who drive low mileage SUV's to the supermarket to buy a loaf of bread. And its not just macho guys, many women drive them too. What are they thinking? We don't have many farms or ranches around here, any off roading is purely recreational. 95% of these SUV's are parked in front of suburban split levels just like mine and are primarily commuter vehicles.

Is there any connection between the American attitude towards our cars and our crappy mass transit?

After 6 years and driving only 52,000 miles, we decided to use our personal "carbon reserves" and go for a new CUV since we will now be "on the road" more in lieu of environmentally stupid and TSA-mangled air travel. At our age, the heavier, quieter and safer CUV makes sense for us. In 10 weeks of use we have put on 4500 miles already with 2700 of that on out-of-state trips. That's 60% highway, 40% local. Our AMPG is 22.4 highway and 17.3 local, so the OAMPG is approaching 20.5. That means we are guzzling 20 gallons a week on average. At almost $ 60 a week, we have a $ 3,120 fuel expense. Any questions?

97 mercury Grand Marquis, with a v8. I average 16 mpg. Much better than my 83 chevy blazer, it sucked it down. And I greatly miss my Kia.
Just finished some research for my uncle, hybrid is the way to go with new cars.
I didnt like driving the hhr to many blind spots.

I won't drive anything but OLD Volvos. My husband made me upgrade to a '93 recently, but I actually prefer the older ones. I love the safety factor, the mileage isn't bad (about 23 mpg), and I buy them for cash (always $2500 or less) and drive them for years. I never have a car payment! I really like the weightiness of the car. I feel secure in them.
