Seven Lakes State Park in Holly, MI is where we most often go hiking with the dogs. This time, I would like to take Gather along with me.
The snakes: information about the Massasauga, Michigan's only venomous snake, and a completely harmless garter.

Along the lakes:

But now I have been lazy with a killer headache too. I think it's a caffeine withdrawal, I haven't been drinking coffee as much, trying to cut down.
Thank you for coming along, JR.
Thanks, Michele :)
Depends on what kind of pills.
Jane, if you got bit with no ill effects, it probably wasn't anything venomous.
Arlene, Garter snakes are not poisonous. Shannon talks about the Massasauga, but has a picture of a Garter.
Jane, that does sound scary. If the fang marks start to hurt in a few minutes, then you probably have some poison. If there is a double scrape, but no fang marks, then it probably wasn't a poisonous snake. Interestingly, some bites by poisonous snakes still don't inject poison. I've heard the speculation that sometimes the snake doesn't inject poison because it is saving it for finding food. But it's better to err on the side of caution!
This looks like a great place to hike. Snakes. Ugh. I was reading Jane's short story about getting bitten by a snake and the thought terrifies me. And grosses me out. Snake teeth under the surface of my skin. Snake spit in my blood. Yuck.
