To share, or not too share

Ke, I guess I was hoping for some intelligent insight to what smart people may think. Why did you comment?...

as for "sharing" Carolyn...if you are talking about taking a CD and burning a copy. I am iffy about that. Iffy because there have been times when others only wanted one song from a CD my son's friends have and they have burnt copies for personal use. I know it is something illegal to do but I see it happen all the time especially amongst teens.

Movies are more so on my radar. It really seems "wrong" to me to deny the movie makers, actors and all who work on the films their cut of the sales of movies, as does it with other performers as well. When it comes to computer files....I honestly don't know anyone who does this but I've been told my a computer savvy friend that this is becoming harder and harder to accomplish.

What is the answer? I don't know if there is one other than "the law is the law" and leave it at that. As for sharing copyright protected content here on gather. You cannot. It is not only against copyright regulations but also is against the TOS of the site.

thanks Carolyn....would you mind telling that to my teenage son? he's at that age where "mom and dad are dumb" comes up time and time again! LOL

I will tell your son that plus, I will say to your son, "Your mom and dad are most likely more intelligent than you, they have had alot more time to learn things, and live life. Believe it or not, there will probably even come a time in your life coming up very soon, within 5 to 10 years if you are a teen), when you say to yourself, "Gee, mom and dad are pretty smart"... Also, there will most likely even be a time when you actually GO to them for advice! Listen to your parents, the most important reason... They love and care for you, listen. Good luck Susan!

The Grateful Dead encouraged people to bootleg their music, seeing it as free marketing. People routinely share movies, books and music from a publicly supported place, ie, public libraries.

My thoughts are that if I like a movie, book or CD, I will buy one as a vote for it.

I could go either way on this issue. I do "borrow" friends music occasionally & put it on my computer, but rarely ever burn it onto a new disc.

Well, if everyone makes copies for free, then the authors and artists would starve. So, I agree that there should be laws against pirating.

It's just sad that the prices for CDs and movies are so high. If they sell the disks for just a bit more than their costs (and not earning so much profit out of the "poor little people"), then more people would be willing to pay. I only buy used discs at significant discount. That's my way of saving money on these things.

Letting a friend borrow a DVD is one thing but if I put a DVD out there for anybody I'm not sharing with my friends anymore...just a any random joker. I can see the media company's point: Everything counts in large amounts.

Yeah, I think that's what is bothering them. That they won't be getting as large amounts of money as they wanted.

If you open the file sharing link on your computer you may wind up sharing more than just a few songs or movies, you are opening yourself up to problems
