Getty Art Museum, Los Angeles

On top of a tall hill sits a series of white buildings. They are built of polished and unpolished marble. The cars are parked toward the base of the hill and a tram takes the visitors upstairs. Inside these buildings is an amazing collection of art - some of the collection is permanent, some is temporary. There is photography - some pieces HUGE to make the observer feel as if he/she were actually there - some are small and black and white - human shapes, very organic (Weston). There are rooms of European paintings - one room dedicated to a single Manet and the questions the artwork raises about perspective. There are huge sculptures in the garden areas and plaza areas between the buildings. Since this is a California museum, the gardens are just as important as the art work in the buildings. There are specific garden areas - with walkways, a maze sitting inside the pool - it will come into full bloom in a few weeks, maybe sooner. Since the plantings were made very carefully, the garden looks different every few weeks based on what is flowering. The view of Los Angeles is wonderful - we had a great day - clear and sunny, but not TOO hot. We could see for MILES.
