Water. Lots of water. This is what your body was deprived of when drinking the alcohol. Drinking a liberal amount of water while drinking will also prevent (or minimize the effect of) a hangover.
I agree, I think water is a key component to recovery. I've also heard that taking aspirin before going to bed helps. I didn't know about Tylenol and possible liver problems- that's scary. Warm milk or tomato juice might be rough. Just for the record, I haven't had a hangover in about 15 years. Today I was just reminded of my youthful transgressions and how I treated them:)
At a new year's eve party many years ago, a friend who is an MD gave this explanation. Alcohol dehydrates, so a hangover is mainly a bad case of dehydration. Drink plenty of water before going to bed and you won;t have a hangover in the morning. She suggested at least a pint but preferbaly a quart. It works. I've never again had a hangover since following her advice.
