After a couple of road trips through Michoacan, Mexico I started noticing that there were some really cool churches. Some were adorned with angels, flowers, and other carvings. Others were not as ornate but still had a special feeling about them.

The first really old church I saw was at the plaza in Uruapan, Michoacan. This is the Church of the Immaculate Conception.

The Church of San Francisco is only two blocks away at the other end of the plaza.

Fifty miles up the road in a smaller town, Paracho, they have a neat church, too. It isn't as old or fancy as the ones in Uruapan, but still a central point of the town.

Capacuaro is even smaller than Paracho. The church is older and bigger, though.

Angahuan has a 400-500 year old church. Well parts of it. The caretaker said parts were that old but they had been incorporated into a newer building. At least that's what I think ne said. My Spanish isn't perfect.

Occassionally I found a more modern church like the one in Petatlan. But, not very often.

La Union has a newer church with an older belltower.

Troncones has a modest church.

So does La Barra de Potosi.

And, in Zihuataqnejo, the town where my love of Mexico began the Catholic church is small and modest.
But, the Catholic Church isn't the only game in town.

There's also an Assembly of God Church and...

A synagogue.
Next November I'll be visiting more towns and gathering more photos of the churches of Mexico...

I have a funny story about the church depicted in the print that you bought: An artist friend of mine, Pepe Del Signo, was commissioned to do a mural of the Virgen de Guadelupe on the ceiling. He was a bit of a surrealist, so he included an image of an embryo inside of Mary's see-through stomach, much in the style of 50's biology illustration meets Diego Rivera. It was really awesome-looking, but the priest and diocese didn't like it at all, so they had a fight and he walked off the job, before finishing it. It's still there today (as far as I know) in its unfinished state, and it's an awesome piece.
As a child we often travelled to Mexico. My foster mom had family there. We did a lot of sight seeing which usually included churches. My favorites were always the ones in the Pueblitos in Jalisco.

I'm usually not into photo-essays, but I love these old churches. I've been looking for a good photo or painting of one of the white churches of Albuquerque.
