As you well know on Gather, our good friend Debbie G. has been in the hospital recovering from a most nasty viral infection. I have heard from Tonia, who has been in Boston this past week working and who was my most welcomed guest yesterday at my home, that Deb loves rocks...any kind of rocks. Whereever they venture, Deb collects rocks...and so these images that I took at Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge in Rhode Island are my gift to Deb in hopes that she makes a speedy recovery and at some point can travel to Massachusetts and venture out with me to see them in reality.
IN PRAISE OF ROCKS

Big rocks, island rocks

Split rocks, whole rocks

Flat rocks, round rocks

Black, gray and white rocks
THESE ARE THE KIND OF ROCKS DEBBIE LOVES.
And then you have

Skipping rocks, surfing rocks

Rocks with chicken pox

seashells and rocks

Bob on the rocks

and rocks that show the map of the world ...

Tenacity in rocks

Varicose vein rocks

not to forget peaceful, complacent, seaweed loving rocks.
"To understand the forces that raised the plateau, one must abandon any idea of the solidity and endurance of hills, mountains, and rocks. Do not trust rocks. A rock resting on the rim of the Grand Canyon may give an impression of strength and permance but as oson as a man turns his back the rock will resume disintergrating and sneaking off to California. And it is not only that particular rock that is unreliable. Every rock everywhere is growing smaller or larger, rising up or sinking down, or creeping about the planet in a scandalous manner."

Rock on!
Vodka on the rocks would have been VERY NICE....maybe you could send that to Deb Madame Donna!!!! Though she's sick....so instead, just send it to me!
magi, it was a wee bit rocky trying to publish this and another today....I was thinkin' about throwing some rocks I collected at the computer but then again, Will was sitting in front of it getting me onto to Skype's...didn't want to hit him!
Great essay. It made ME feel better so it should cheer up Deb too. Just having Tonia back home is bound to make both of them rest a little better tonight. I wish I could come visit too. I haven't been to New England since 1995, I think it was.
I hope that wasn't too nasty for your lovely photo article Bob. But rock rhymes always remind me of that. I have to be very careful when reading Fox in Sox to the boys...
Take it easy Deb, and you'll be here faster!
Funny, you must have been sending messages my way. I recently posted a few pictures of rocks without knowing this and I took several similar pictures of the various rocks on the ground. I must post at least one more so you can see. BTW these were taken where I go clam digging!
Did you connect with June O. She loved your photo-essay on the wild flowers.
A very beautiful and creative essay on rocks for Dbbie.
then other times we explore new places. Roy Hilbinger has really opened our eyes up to Rhode Island.
I am sure you have read some of Leo Lionni's books to your children...one in particular I really love....it's called "Frederick" about a little mouse who doesn't "work" gathering provisions in the summer...he sits on a rock and gathers "colors" for the gray days of winter. I identify with that story completely....come next week I'll be going back to school....my days will be spent in the classroom inside....and then in the evening, more preparation for the next day. I will have limited time...so for now...one more week...I have complete freedom. My boys are grown and are independent and busy with their own living...thank goodness... and so its only papa and I. So...who cares if the dishes remain in the dish rack one more day or we climb into an unmade bed! Someday, Kathryn, you'll be in this spot...it may not seem so now...with kids still around...but it does get much easier, trust me.
Like a brand new teacher, Linda, each year I anticipate the opening of school with anxiety. Usually I don't sleep the night before the first day. Crazy huh...going into my fortieth year of teaching and it's like starting first grade all over again.
This is a lovely dedication to a lovely lady Bob, if it's the same Debbie and Tonia they were very supportive of my dear friend Ruth MacGill when she was loosing weight rapidly. And even sent her some Banana Bread. I do hope Debbie gets well soon, Why is it every time I visit your site you are doing something for someone else Bob. I'm sure Debbie and Tonia will both love your wonderful photo essay about rocks. I know she loves rocks Ruth sent her some from the desert where she lives, take care.

Thanks for dropping by dear friend...hope all is well with you...sending you healing energy.
Once again, please consider posting your images at daytripperboston or daytrippercape groups. Thanks, DTD
I did think "Bob on the Rocks" was funny too Tonia....sitting alone in this room I do have a party with myself!!!!
