Today is a mid-August day yet the 95% humidity that held it's tight grip is a distant memory (even though it was only a handful of days ago). It's in the high 60s/low 70s and a pretty strong breeze blows. As I ran my errands today I noticed gone were the tank tops and shorts and jeans and polo shirts took over. The BACK TO SCHOOL signs taunted me in Target. Autumn is my favorite season here in New England. It is when I begin to breathe normally again.
I've got my textbooks and assignments early to prep for my September vacation, and 10 days of school to be missed. I have read and re-read the work I set aside to get done prior to Labor Day. I have mapped out the rest of the summer. I have finished my 2nd book club book (my 2nd meeting is Aug 22). This is the first day in a while I've been able to stay home and read on the back porch. It's been pure bliss.
I'm clinging to the day and the weekend knowing a stack of work awaits. For now, I'm doing other things...mindless tasks. I do not want to give up my freedom and dive in head first. I know the next moment of a breather will be in late December. Once I start I can't stop (except for the vacation in September). I hold off. I stare at the unopened thick text books and try to pretend they are not there looming like mountains.
Just for one more day I think I'd like to fool myself. Just for one more day I'd like to pick the veggies in the garden and eat them and act like a kid on summer vacation. And then Monday comes and I start the work-week all over again.
*heads back to the porch*
Here's a big F-you to school today. I'm not ready to start thinking again.
