Kronborg Castle in Elsinore (Helsingoer) is known around the world from Shakespeare's Hamlet, and in fact it is one of the most important renaissance castles in Northern Europe.

This military fortress is surrounded by bastions and ravelins, and with its location out to the Oresund, the waters between Denmark and Sweden, it had to be built to withstand enemy fire and attacks.

This map shows how Kronborg is surrounded by wide moats and walls to keep the enemy out.

The entrance into the fort

There are many tunnels at Kronborg, both on the outside wall as well as in the inner walls protecting the fort.

Frederik the II of Denmark initiated the construction of Kronborg in 1574, and the work was done in 1585, the fortress was built to replace an old castle built by Erik af Pommern in 1420. In th 17th century a major part of the castle was reconstructed by Christian IV after a fire destroyed a great part of the castle in 1629.

These beautiful flowers were growing all over the heavy stone walls.

A swan and her babies had found a safe spot in the quiet waters surrounding the fort.

And now I'm mad. You were this close to me and didn't tell me you were going to Helsingor. I'm over there allll the time. It is very near to my house. Just a 20 minute ride on the Scandline Ferry.
Our trip to Helsingor was kind of a spontaneous one, as I was staying at my grandmother's house by Roskilde. My sons were going crazy in her city house though with all her nice furniture and nic nacs, so I just had to get them outside to run of the energy:)
