What’s Going On?
Does anyone remember Marvin Gaye’s Grammy winning album? I bought the CD several years ago, and someone stole it in computer class, so I bought it again. It is, by far, one of the best CD’s ever recorded, and although an old one, very timely. I’ll include the lyrics from the title song at the end of the article, but the whole CD is beyond anything words could describe, and it made him an Icon, emphatically with a capital “I” -- creative, can-do, thinking out of the box.
At the Barack Obama rally where I volunteered, there was a section cordoned off for the VIP’s, which would have been necessary. Public officials do need some protection, and ex- Congressman/Mayor Dellums made sure there was plenty of police protection for those officials. There was never a moment’s rest during the day, and although I wasn’t on the Security Detail
(that job has been reserved for husky big guys), it was everyone’s job to keep an eye out.
The public officials stood out, because they were the only ones in this special area dressed in suit and tie (the men), and the females were all nicely appareled as well), probably overdressed. But, there was one person who stuck out, with his U.C. Berkeley yellow
sweatshirt and jeans. He was very tall, young, blonde, very attractive, and had I been 20 years younger… hmmm, but he was a youngster.
I walked over to him, and said,
“This is the VIP section.”
He said, “I know that,” as he looked around, assessing the area, probably deciding where the best place would be to position himself.
I said, “You’re not supposed to be here. Just how did you get past the barriers, police, and guards, anyway?”
He said, “I wanted to.” and he stared at me very defiantly.
That did it! I just laughed, and said, “Right on, Brother. Have a good time. But I never saw you. I know NOTHING!” With that he went off.
To be frank, had it been anyone else, other than a U.C. Berkeley student, I would have called the guards to have him removed. But with Berkeley students? They are going to FIND a way to do what they want to do, when they want to do it and how they want to do it, and I just admire that so much, I didn’t have the heart to have that kid thrown out. He had succeeded in doing what no one else had done. Creative, can-do.
There is a lesson to learn from that young man. Rules are not always good things and sometimes rules are meant to be broken. Rules -- for example -- that tell us to fight a war in a broken down country, when Osama bin Forgotten runs free, 6’5”, supposedly on dialysis and can’t be found, after nearly six years -- what’s wrong with that picture? ANSWERS>I going to have an audience with some U.C. Berkeley students and ask them about their opinions on Iraq, this country, what to do, directions, and so on and so on and so on and so on. Where the older generation seems to be stalemated and immobilized, I am certain the leaders of tomorrow have innovative, creative, can-do ideas that would make for a brighter…today.

Below are the title song lyrics:
*What’s Going On, by Marvin Gaye
Mother, mother
There's too many of you crying
Brother, brother, brother
There's far too many of you dying
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some loving here today
Father, father
We don't need to escalate
You see, war is not the answer
For only love can conquer hate
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some loving here today
Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me, so you can see
What's going on, what's going on
What's going on, what's going on
Mother, mother
Everybody thinks we're wrong
But who are they to judge us
Simply 'cos our hair is long
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some loving here today
Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me, so you can see
What's going on, what's going on
Tell me what's going on
I'll tell you what's going on

Wish I'd been at that rally!
I have to tell you, first! I got to Jason H's place yesterday. Extravagance. I know you are a Bay Arean. Paaaarrrteee --- Party! It may be presumptuous of me, but we have got to go to work on him to have an outdoor party over there in the "burbs", maybe a pool/barbecue party. He says his neighbors are cool, but I've learned to invite the neighbors and that way, how can they complain? If you haven't connected to him -- connect, and together we can work on him. I am sooo naughty!
You know how long we have summers here, so we still have time! Uh-oh, I just noticed he hasn't been on this article yet, but I don't care. Maybe seeing this post might be a not-so-subtle hint. I KNOW we are friends now! Thanks Kris, Kool Kat!
Peace, and love.
I'm glad to see the Berkley "tradition" being passed on to the younguns!
Packing my bags, tell Jason I'm so there and thanks for the invite, I'll do the catering! ;-)

LOVE that flying pink piglet, and I dig your stuff, too. We are synchronized, I believe. Berkeley will never change, I hope. Thanks for your compliment and thanks for your comments, in general.
Thanks, again!
You said,
"Never went to a prom or formal or semi-formal, and I went to a lot becaue there was the all girls school, the all boys school, the optometry college, cbc, msu and ut all here, that didn't play Marvin Gaye songs. His music was so good. "
If only he could see that comment. What a tribute to a man who really deserves it. Thank you!
That -- to me -- is what is so magical about music. It's like Shun said, it's "timeless."
"Moonlight Sonata" is how old, and yet I jam with it sometimes. Music is so spiritual in its very essence that, yes it is a blast, a blast from the past sometimes . . .
Isn't it amazing how, no matter how much music how been produced/created, the creative mind can still produce original stuff?
And yes, Marvin is the ICON. Thanks for your comment!
(Really lol). I am only surprised you are the first to mention that one!
My favorite -- in fact it's playing right now is "I Want You." I love the fast-paced/danceable tempo, and -- I don't know if it's a banjo, guitar or synthesizer -- but whatever it is, IT'S JAMMIN'!
When I listen to "I Want You" and so many others, Marvin has this way of . . . (I'm sighing trying to find the words . . . ) bringing you into his experience. I mean when he says, "but you don't want me now" every single time I want to reply defiantly
"WHO doesn't want you, Marvin!!!?? How dare they! Are they crazy? I'll get them!"
You know, Nan? It's like he draws you in with him, although l find it hard to believe many out there would NOT have wanted Marvin. WOW!
Then he says, and I still use this expression,
"One-way love is just a fantasy aw Sugar! To share is special, pure and natural." (Maybe it's best to move on from anyone who doesn't "want you", don't you think?) Move on to something BETTER.
"I want you the right way. I want you, but I want you to want me to . . . "
Preach, Marvin! Everybody listen up! Abandon negative one-sided relationships, unless of course you've got Marvin's Gaye's determination (lol).
But Marvin -- either the music is playing to him or vice-versa -- blend into each other in such a perfect fit. I listen to the accompaniment, and I think "That's mastery -- to be able to be the major instrument (Marvin's voice) in his pieces. I don't even know if I am explaining it adequately. Music is so powerful! I am dancing in this chair right now, because "I Want You" does that. How can anyone sit still with that song?
Then his use of "Ham Mercy!", "Sugar", "Precious", "Darling", "Baby" -- he just reeeeeks with sensuality. His voice, his voice, his voice! Every time I have listened to something of his, I say in my mind, "Marvin, it has been a distinct pleasure!"
Didn't mean to get carried away. Thanks, Nan!
