I suspect when he actually enters, if he does, his negatives, which are many, will be a lot better known, and this won't stand long. Thompson was a lobbyist, his kids are lobbyists, he lobbied for the wrong issues, and it even turns out that he was a spy for Nixon on the Watergate committee, and not the hard charging investigator that has publicly been his image. The man has no integrity, and is existing on his popular acting portrayal, and when the lights get on his real qualities, he's in trouble, Publius. The main thing he has going for him is how bad his Republican competition is.
Being a lobbyist is not going to kill him. He worked for Howard Baker who is quite popular in the South and who will campagin for him which will help.
As for being a spy this is what he did and this is common practice in investigations
"Even though I had no authority to act for the committee, I decided to call Fred Buzhardt [Nixon's attorney] at home" to tell him that the committee had learned about the taping system, Thompson wrote. "I wanted to be sure that the White House was fully aware of what was to be disclosed so that it could take appropriate action." -- Fred D. This comes from a staffer for a guy who was one of the men that went to the White House and told the President he needed to resign. He can hardly be called a spy.

Thanks for a good article/link MoD. I will agree with you that being a lobbyist is not going to hurt him in his candidacy. He did his job, whatever it was at the time. Lobbyist, Senator, Investigator and yes, actor. This is not a bad thing. And you are very correct that he is indeed very popular in the South.
Thanks for the article. Remember Fred was in the Reagan Justice Dept. I admit I'm leaning toward Thompson. I just wish he'd bring some of that Law and Order character's charisma to his speeches and appearances, and keep his beautiful, smart wife out his campaign management!
