Cooking with herbs is very common but the different types of herbs can be expensive to purchase. It can also be annoying when you are cooking a meal and discover you are out of certain ones your recipe calls for. You can grow your own herbs at home without too much trouble. Herb gardening can even be done indoors on a window sill so you don’t need a yard in order to do so.
Most herbs grow from seeds including basil, mint, sage, and thyme which are all commonly used to cook with. Herbs are also grown for medicinal purposes as well. Herbs are the easiest of all plants to grow so you don’t have to worry about having a green thumb to be successful at it.
Herbs grow well with plenty of sun so plant your outdoor garden in an area where they can get a great deal of it. If you decide to have your herb garden indoors choose window sills that get plenty of direct sunlight. Herbs are not seasonal so you can get them to grow any time of year, even in the winter months. If you do not get enough sunlight during those months you can use a heating lamp to assist them.
There isn’t too much maintenance involved with herb gardening either. In addition to making sure they get plenty of sunlight and water you do need to trim the leaves occasionally. New leaves grow from the center so you need to keep the outer ones trimmed.
As you can see it is quite easy to grow the various herbs you want for making delicious meals and for medicinal purposes. You can purchase your own items for herb gardening individually or buy a complete kit that offers you everything you need to get started. Many of these kits offer a wide selection of different herbs so you will be able to grow several different kinds at one time.
Make sure you are familiar with the right way to harvest the various herbs you grow in your garden.. Start by picking them and washing them very well. Allow the herbs to dry over night so that all of the moisture has been removed. Cut the stems off of the ends and gather a group of the herb together with rubber bands.
Hang these banded groups of herbs upside down until the leaves are very dry. You can then crumble them up and place them in air tight jars until you are ready to use them. Herbs last a very long time so you can enjoy the benefits of your harvest for a very long time.
