One little ape capered about,
opened a cage and let another one out.
Two little apes have found escape,
eight more apes left behind the gate.
Such a sight as I peep through my window to see,
two little apes looking back at me!
I gaped at the apes as I wondered in awe,
and giggled at the antics of the apes I saw.
Now, ten little apes frolicking in the sun,
picking grapes from my vine and having such fun!
Dressed with capes, taped to the nape of their necks,
dapper in suits, colored with checks.
Then, the paperboy plops a paper against my door.
startling the apes, and me even more!
Up to the apex of the house they swing,
I wonder what news the paperboy brings.
I rush to the door to open it wide,
grabbing the paper I look inside.
Wadding the paper to throw it away,
I grab hold of a grapevine, as the apes did in play.
But, alas, the apes in capes that had capered around,
with all my searching, could no longer be found.
I awoke with a start with a sound of a scrape,
with the end of my dream, I knew, the apes had escaped!
