Books You're Reading

Always looking to expand my list of books that I want and keeping an eye out for something new, I like to ask from time to time what everyone is reading or would recommend to others. I love to talk about books. So, for me right now, I have just finished a great memoir by Betsy Lerner called, "Food and Loathing" and I am getting ready to read either a Nora Roberts Trilogy or Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenia. I would love to hear some of what you have been or will be reading.

I've been on a business book kick lately. I finally got around to reading The Martha Rules by Martha Stewart and, surprise, I actually thought it was good, solid advice.

And I just re-read Never Eat Alone by Keith Ferrazzi (I'm actually talking with his VP of Strategic Planning tomorrow afternoon) of Ferrazzi Greenlight. Great book about building your network, one introduction at a time.

Next is a biography of Elizabeth I. Looks really good, I just need a couple of days to sit and read. (Ha, I'm married, a mom to 4 kids and I own my own business - like THAT will ever happen! lol)

I sell used books, so I always have a three foot stack by my bed. I'm reading "The Hours" right now. I just finished reading a couple of books by Christopher Moore. They are definitely not for everyone, especially not those that are easily offended, but I found them to be hilarious.
I just finished reading "The True and Outstanding Adventures of the Hunt Sisters" by Olivia Hunt. Girl! It made me laugh and then it broke my heart and made me cry, and then it made me laugh again. It's definately a girly book, and I loved it. Right now I'm reading one called "Free Bird" by Greg Garret and "Tales From Margaritaville" by Jimmy Buffet! I'll let you know what I think of them once I've finished!

Krissy, if you loved "The True and Outstanding Adventures of the Hunt Sisters" by Olivia Hunt, I highly recommend "The Glass Castle" by Jeanette Wells. Hauntingly good bio of the MSNBC entertainment reporter. It's heartbreaking how she started her life and I know I just wanted to stand up and cheer at where she has come in life. Just wanted to share.

I just went to the library (my second home) and got a great book about the Appalachian mountain people. It's title is: "More Than Moonshine - Appalachian Recipes and Recollections". The author is Sidney Saylor Farr.

It's a wonderful collection of good, old-fashioned cooking and living in the mountains!

I read Anna Karenia, its good. I just started reading "Saving the Fish From Drowning" by Amy Tan. I like books written by Pearl Buck, Main Street by Upton Sinclair, Roots by Alex Hailey, etc, etc. Many people like John Grishom. Happy Reading!

I am lucky to get the newspaper read most days, but I do enjoy memoirs and medical suspense books (Robin Cook is a great author).

LOL Karen, I have been riding around with a copy of Anna Karenia in my van for over a year now. I guess this is a hint to finally read it. I did read Anna of the Tropics which is a play. The title comes from Ana Karenia. The story takes place in a cigar factory. They hire a narrator to read to the workers while they roll the cigars. The narrator reads Anna K to them. The influence that the story has on the workers is the juice of this play. I thought it was excellent. I believe it is a Pulitzer prize winner.

I'm reading black rose by Nora Roberts. It's the second of 'in the garden trilogy' the first was very good and so far so is the second.

Try The Robber Bride by Margeret Atwell. Zenia's a force to behold...

It's African-American fiction, and not sure how you're taste may run, but please try "Hand I Fan With by Tina Mcelroy Ansa. Very interesting read and should you read it, email me and we'll talk about "Herman"!

I have a need for humor writing every once in a while. Right now I'm reading 'Created in Darkness by Troubled Americans: The Best of McSweeney's Humor Category'. It is more do-able for me during the summer when kids are around because it's a compilation of essays and stories. I have only read the first three tonight, but they've all made me laugh, especially "The Spirit of Christmas" by Kurt Luchs and "On The Implausibility of the Death Star's Trash Compactor" by J. M. Tyree.

I just finished reading "Buffalo Gals" About the life of Calamity (Martha Jane Canary) It was quite interesting. Also finished reading "Solider's Revellie" About Custer and the Seventh Calvery. I am starting in to read "Dragonsblood" By Anne and Todd McCaffery, Todd is Anne's son and this is the first of a new set of Pern books co-authored by mother and son. So far quite interesting if you like Sci-fi fantasy.
I'm currently reading the first two books of the Vampire Diaries (Technically, it's bound together as 1 book, and I think I just got to where book 2 starts), as well as Harry Potter & The Pisoner of Azkaban. After reading book 7, I decided to go back and start from the begining, so in the past month, I've read book 7, 1, & 2, as well as The Honeymoon by James Patterson, 2 re-reads on 2 of my older Johanna Lindsey books, and one or two others I can't think of.

Tomorrow, I plan to make a pit stop in Grand Rapids on my way up north to purchase a book or 2 for my camping trip. :)

I'm reading Anne Lamont's book on faith and spirituality.
I have also been reading books on frugal cooking and love the site Allrecipes.com which is NOT a book but I still like to go there to read and save money on our grocery budget.

One of the more intriguing books I read was called How to Live Without a Car. While we are not able to do that (yet), it was still food for thought as I added up all the COSTS of car ownership, from maintenance to gas to insurance and even depreciation (will not recoup cost of car). The person who wrote the book lived in a city with good public transportation but saved so much by not buying a car that he could easily afford to take a taxi or even rent a car if he REALLY had need of one - and still came out ahead!

I am reading a classic: one of R. H. Blyth's series on Haiku. The volume dealing with Spring. He was the first to write a comprhensive work on the Japanese haiku. Though some of his assertions about the form have not stood the test of time, it remains the"Old Testament" of haiku literature in english. His 4 vol series made a huge impact on english haiku writers. Ginsberg, Kerouac and Snyder among them.

I'm also reading The Straight Girls Guide to Sleeping with Chicks. by Jen Sincero.

Admittedly, I'm not the target audience. It was written for women who are curious about having sex with another woman and how to go about it and all the great stuff you can do together when you finally get to it.

Whew! Chicks really know their way around, well, chicks! I wish I'd read this book years ago and so does my wife.

I am currently waiting for the third book of the Inheritance trilogy to come out, and haven't found anything to read til then lol

last week I finished " Promise not to tell" a debut novel by Jennifer Mc Mahon and gave a review on Gather and now I have started" Kaaterskill Falls" written by " Allegra Goodman".

My favorite series is the O'Malley Series by Dee Henderson AWESOME! Right now im reading the second book of the Lowlands of Scotland Series by Liz Curtis Higgs. The first book is called Thorn in my Heart...Great book! And the one im reading now is called Fair is the Rose....Really really good so far and its a continuation of the book before. Let me know if you read them.
