So .... even though I'm not 100% sure which program I want to take (MA in English vs MFA in Creative Writing), I have decided to apply to the one that triggered my need to pay attention to the whole issue by having their application date SO SOON! Says on their website that they only accept about 18% of applicants....yikes!
So now I need to put together a portfolio in the next week or two. 20 pages each of fiction (short stories), writing for children (YA novel) and .... I guess I've decided to go with creative non-fiction for the third genre....
Here's what it says in the guidelines:
Non-Fiction: Double-spaced. Up to 20 pages (no academic essays, press releases, corporate reports, scientific papers, newspaper reporting, reviews or copy writing). We are looking for non-fiction that is creative in form. This includes work such as essays (non-academic), travel writing, memoir, magazine writing, biography, popular history (rather than academic history).
I can use a few pages of the work I've done re: going back to school for grown ups, and also, since memoir is one of the categories, thought maybe I could use some of what I wrote re: taking care of ma ....
I was thinking I could pull together a collection of those pieces - but when I pulled them all together I have way more than 20 pages and I do want to include some other stuff.... so maybe will just use one or two of them.
Not sure where to put French Fries - it could be considered 'short fiction' - and I did write it to be a short story - but it isn't fiction - so suppose it could go into memoir; creative non-fiction side of things.
The other thing I have done is sent an email to one of my profs and asked her if she would meet with me to help me sort out my options re: grad school and specifically re: the MA vs MFA thing. She's the prof that first encouraged me to be thinking Phd, not just BA, etc....and she's supervising my Honours Essay this year; I value her input and I don't think she'll mind.
Anyway .... we're off to the bank re: the mortgage, and then to have lunch with the kid who is supposed to be popping out grandchild #2, not driving up here to go out to lunch with us!
