WASHINGTON - Looking past the presidential nomination fight, Democratic leaders quietly fret that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton at the top of their 2008 ticket could hurt candidates at the bottom.
They say the former first lady may be too polarizing for much of the country. She could jeopardize the party's standing with independent voters and give Republicans who otherwise might stay home on Election Day a reason to vote, they worry.
In more than 40 interviews, Democratic candidates, consultants and party chairs from every region pointed to internal polls that give Clinton strikingly high unfavorable ratings in places with key congressional and state races.
"I'm not sure it would be fatal in Indiana, but she would be a drag" on many candidates, said Democratic state Rep. Dave Crooks of Washington, Ind.
Unlike Crooks, most Democratic leaders agreed to talk frankly about Clinton's political coattails only if they remained anonymous, fearing reprisals from the New York senator's campaign. They all expressed admiration for Clinton, and some said they would publicly support her fierce fight for the nomination - despite privately held fears.
The chairman of a Midwest state party called Clinton a nightmare for congressional and state legislative candidates.
A Democratic congressman from the West, locked in a close re-election fight, said Clinton is the Democratic candidate most likely to cost him his seat.

You know, the inside word is the we (Democrats) don't want Hillary, don't like her. She's made a lot of enemies in the Party and is tolerated because of Bill. I'm surprised. This shouldn't get back to the Republicans.
I think the Republicans already know, though. Watergate-like activities don't stop just because someone gets caught. And we don't live in the Midwest; we live in Nancy Pelosi territory, where women leaders are IN.
If you want to check some of my old old comments you see I have mentioned this before.
Vickey, you have expressed my sentiments, although I did respect most of Bill's accomplishments.
I'm happy for you Lyndon, and I'll vote Republican.
I want to vote for Hillary. So far she seems competent, experienced, politically sophisticated, and able - and her heart IS in the right place.
There are those who will hate any Dem for any reason, no matter what - so who cares about them.
I am not into hating anyone, and I am not into hating Hillary. Likewise the objective of politicians is to WIN. Hillary just isn't going to do it for them and they know that, as the article states, she is too polarizing. The Democratic Party knows it, and sadly, the Republican Party knows it and -- just like you -- they want her to win too.
I just had a funny thought (lol).
If Hillary were to win, I would be posting articles in favor of my REPUBLICAN candidate for President.
There is no way I am going to compromise my priniciples. At least the Republicans consistently stuck to theirs.
No, I don't think they're just realizing it. That's why they are "secretly" concerned; it's housekeeping types of things that you don't want the general public to know. What a disaster if Hillary were to win the nomination, leader of the Party, and it comes out that the Party didn't even want her. Now, wouldn't that be encouraging to the Democratic base.
She doesn't have a prayer to win in November 08.
Dan, they already SEE, and are praying Hillary DOES NOT win. Barack Obama is the only answer for the Democrats -- and see, once again, consistency -- the Republicans are openly admitting their concern that he will win.
I am not familiar with Pat Paulson. Maybe you mean Pat Robertson? Heavens, no!
if he is who you mean.
Lloyd (lol), now that can be taken two ways, and I'll just leave it at that!
Lloyd, shame, shame, shame (lol), or maybe not!
About Hillary:
.............................."OLD SINS CAST LONG SHADOWS"...................................
I told you that the pulse coming from other Democrats was the same as mine. I went to get this quote from one of the emails out of my box this morning:
"...(2) A very smart man said on TV today "The Republicans have a great chance to win in '08". Now most people would think (as I did) that this guy is NUTS based on Bush's polling popularity these days and the unhappiness of the American people about Iraq - however, he clarified what he meant by saying: "The dems are probably going to make Sen Clinton their candidate and that assures them of a loss." I can't agree with that more. If she's the dem pick I'm voting REPUB!!"...
Consistency may not be a virtue, but at least I know what I am getting. With Hillary, it may be worse than a Franco. I do not like the
..........UNKNOWN.
All this talk about "experience"
At least one million dead -- yeah, I'm pretty sure the numbers are more than one million since our government likes to lie to us, and we allow it, and more than that
-----------WOUNDED
-----------MAIMED
-----------FAMILIES
----------LIVES FOREVER CHANGED
-----------HOW MANY MILLIONS ARE AFFECTED THERE!
----------SEE NOW I AM STARTING TO GET ANGRY
------------AND YOU WANT ME TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR PUTTING THAT....
------------THAT
-----------MURDERER IN THE WHITE HOUSE!
NEVER!
AS I SAID, AT LEAST JOHN EDWARDS HAD THE DECENCY TO APOLOGIZE, ADMIT HIS
ERROR, BUT HILLARY...
LJ, YOU GO, AND LOOK INTO THE EYES OF THE CHILDREN WHO HAVE NO PARENTS AND TELL THEM, HILLARY DIDN'T MEAN IT, IT'S OKAY...
THEN SETTLE BACK INTO YOUR 'EASY' CHAIR.
NO! I WILL NOT VOTE FOR HER, SHE KNEW BETTER.
SHE HAD AN ADVANTAGE 534 DID NOT HAVE. SHE WAS FIRST LADY.
HER HUSBAND HAD ACCESS. SHE MET HEADS OF STATE, NO DOUBT MET SADDAM.
I AM NOT EXPLAINING MYSELF AGAIN. I AM NOT EXPLAINING MY REASONS.
SHE IS THE ONE THAT HAS A LOT TO ANSWER FOR.
I did need to come back here and apologize for getting emotional. The war in Iraq is a very personal and emotional thing to me. To many times in my own life, family and friends have been touched by war, and have returned, never the same,
NEVER THE SAME. Things said about their experiences. What is worse than war?
(Rhetorical question?)
While it is true, there are times, in defense of America, that war is necessary, the War in Iraq was not. Yours truly knew that without, "experience". Obama knew it, therefore, "Ms Hillary touting all her EXPERIENCE" didn't?
This war had troubled me since it has started. Its consequences can never be reversed, mended or compensated. I keep thinking of our young guys and gals, who should be here at home, living it up, getting a college education or being with their families. Instead, they are in a foreign country, disconnected from most or all they love, many dying mercilessly, not in comfort, not being able to look into the eyes of loved ones as they take their last breath, maybe not comforted by anyone at all, dying all alone, perhaps, and for what? OIL? MONEY? Who have these young American heroes hurt?
I know Hillary isn't directly responsible, but she could have been a leader, stood up and shown leadership by saying, "NO!" Barbara Lee did. I was once a staunch Hillary supporter, but the day she voted for that resolution she lost me FOREVER.
The condition, the state of this country run far beyond red/blue, Party lines, colour lines, sex (male, female) lines. Things are very critical. There are men and women over in a foreign land expecting us here in this country to DO something. I don't plan to let them down by playing petty politics, just because I happen to have always voted Democrat. I am voting my conscience, and I will not vote for someone who is shaky and untrustworthy.
Barack Obama is my man.
We've got babies fighting a war that should have never been waged, while only one in Congress had a child in it!
If they REALLY believed in this war, why aren't their children there?
I am tired of the games, the politics, but who can add to what you just said, Lynn?
I pray to God Almighty that the best person wins...
in which case, God won't be choosing Hillary!
Memories of war:
Forget about my family members for a moment. What about others?
As a tiny child, 5 or 6 (Viet Nam War) in the back seat of my parents' car we would be travelling from the San Joaquin Valley to the Bay Area, and I would see these trucks with troops in Fatigues in the sitting in the back of trucks. I was too young then to realize what I was seeing; I just knew they were soldiers, like the toy soldiers (GI Joes) my brothers played with. I would open the window to wave at them, and they would beam and wave back.
Reflecting back on that I now wonder how many?
How many made it back from Viet Nam?
How many didn't?
How many of them had their lives changed forever?
How many of those young boys were wounded beyond repair?
How many of them had their minds wounded beyond repair?
How many families were damaged?
Now, that I am an adult and I DO understand what that child was seeing it makes me cry today
The consequences of war.
references to my alleged "spite" and "extremely disingenuous about riffing" do not add to the discussion on Hillary. You could, of course write an article criticizing me, which would be the most appropriate forum -- not this one, and I invite you to do so, but I am extremely tough-skinned, so have at it. In the meantime, my statements about your candidate, Hillary stand. You are doing an outstanding job -- what exacting ARE you doing. I mean, what IS your position?
I stand by all my statements.
I've got to give the GOP props, their organizational skills and network is a thing to behold. Democrats should take note...
I'm leaning towards Obama, personally, and that's after taking a good, hard look at all the candidates, regardless of party affiliation. There's really no Republican candidate for me that comes close to sharing the same values as myself, so that's not an option for me during this race, but that's not discounting that I may never vote Republican, but the likehood is slim, at best.
It looks like I have made some progress! Good!
Stacey:
What can I say? You have said it. Whatever your choice, I know it will be based on an objective look at the candidates and which is best to run this country. I applaud you!
