I received lots of old time remedies handed down from our mothers and grandmothers. Now how about answering this one. With all the recent rains here in the northeast, I have a sudden influx of little tiny ants around my dishwasher!!! Nothing like ant traps or constant cleaning seems to help. What are some suggestions for things to use in the kitchen area. I live pretty much in the wilds, so I've dealt with insect things before and always found control somewhere. These ants are winning! Help!

In aromatherapy, we use peppermint essential oil - a few drops with water (shake each time you use it), in a sprtzer bottle - ants do not like peppermint, it's the smell. Here in Connecticut we don't really have a problem, but when we lived in Florida, there were lots of ants and we still never had a problem with them. Good luck!
Another home remedy is one my Aunt used years ago - she took a container, filled it with sand and put a few incense sticks in it, lit. The bugs left - possibly they didn't like the smell or the smoke? But it worked.

This should be effective on most Ants since they tend to crave sweets.
Mix it as follows:
1 Heaping teaspoon of Granulated Sugar
1 Level teaspoon of Poisonous Boric Acid powder
1 Teaspoon of HOT water
COMPLETELY dissolve the Boric Acid in the HOT water. Mix the sugar into it until it is dissolved. Half fill small caps like those found on milk jugs and soda bottles.
Place the caps where Ants are a nuisance. To protect pets from this POISON, place the caps inside plastic containers that have holes punched in to allow the Ants to enter. Mark the container with "Skull and Crossbones" Poison symbol. When the Ants are gone, dispose of the containers properly.
This is a Very strong recipe. Increasing the sugar to a whole cup should still be very lethal to Ants. Of course, it would require adding a cup of hot water to dissolve it. $6.00 will buy 12 ounces of Boric Acid; enough to last you and your neighbors for years, if the container is kept air-tight and cool.
