So when did you and Dad adopt each other, Mom?

We have a son we adopted when he was five. I intend to tell the whole story, from the beginning of our adoption journey to now, but I thought I'd share this quick snippet for now. My son simply walked into the room one day and asked, "Hey, Mom, when did you and Dad adopt each other?"

Sure made me think! In a way, marriage is similar to adoption, two strangers meeting, falling in love and deciding to form a union and, with luck, a family. It is a joining of two lives.

I did explain the word "marriage" to him. ;) and how and when people generally decide to make that decision.

How cute. I love the way small children use their own logic to reach amusing conclusions. Once, when I told my son I didn't have enough money to buy something, he said, "Why don't you go to the bank and buy some."

You are spot on that marriage requires each spouse to adopt each other. In my book Great! All the Time! I teach about the hierarchy of our relationships with those to whom and for whom our values make us responsible and I stress that your spouse should always come first in priority right after your responsibility to your self.

I think this is a cool way of looking at marriage from a child's eyes. You did in fact, decide to stay together for life, and that is what you do for that child. Perhaps when we marry we do adopt each other. It is nice to think about it in just that way.

That's a cute, sweet story. I think adoption is great. My husband just adopted my daughter a few months ago (stepparent adoption). The only thing she says she doesn't like about it is that she still can't spell her last name right, but she's almost got it.
