How many of you remember when you walked into school on the first day and the teacher gave you a tablet and a pencil? Then she would give you another one each quarter. Those were all the supplies you needed. Now my children come home with lists. Not only do they not get a pencil and tablet, their teachers ask each parent to send in tissues, markers, crayons, paper towels, etc, in the elementary school. And then the children are given a list of exactly what kind of notebook or organizer you must buy for them to use in class. I've even had one year where one of my children had to have five specific colors of folders and spiral notebooks. It all runs into money. And sometimes the list comes home the first day and the items are needed within a day or two. Is this problem common to PA or is it like this everywhere? Go ahead and complain. Maybe I won't feel so put upon.

Cooler still is that the CEO of Sonic lives in our neighborhood. For many years now, Sonic has provided backpacks, school and art supplies, and sometimes really cool blankets embroidered with the school logo to EVERY child in our school. In this way, the poorer children who can't afford a backpack get one, and the more affluent kids get one, as well. No one "stands out" because they have a Sonic backpack - half the kids carry them - the "rich" kids as well as the "poor" kids.
