This summer, I, Ophelia discovered Kurt Vonnecut. You see, Mistress Elizabeth was embarrassed when Kurt died this Spring and everyone on Gather was paying tribute to this famous writer and she hadn't really ever read any of his books. So, off to the bookshelves in the bedrooms of the city boys who only come home once in a while she went to find "this master of contemporary literature". On Zach's shelf she found Piano Player. "Ummm....I though this guy just wrote science fiction, well, I'll take a peep and see how it goes", she said to herself. Soon she was engrossed reading on the front porch in the steamer chair where I take both my morning and afternoon naps. The only time she gave the chair up is when she walked that spoiled dog of hers or played on the machine that sits on the desk where Sophia likes to lay.

One day she left her book on the steamer chair and I happened to glance inside...ummm, not for me...talked about machines taking over, dissatisfied workers called Reeks and Wrecks , and people with high IQ's taking over and running the country. Doesn't look like that is happening too soon here in America.... imagine Bush with an engineering or a science degree! That really is black humor... black, black humor. I don't know about this Vonnegut guy... seems a tad like a Prophet of Doom to me!
The next book Mistress started reading was called Galapagos.... I thought it was about the Wild West and horses galloping into the sunset....should of known better with a writer like Vonnegut... no wild horses... just wild, absurd stories about the human race turning into creatures with little brains and flippers told by a ghost, mind you. I just flipped through it ... did find something interesting though...must remind Mistress Elizabeth not to use that machine she uses all the time because other wise she'll start talking in quotes... meaningless quotes. She already talks in several languages...but if she starts quoting all the time, I think I will take a cruise ship to Galapagos! Anyhow, that girl just zoomed through that book... then she gave it a rest for awhile... no more reading on the steamer chair...I had it back!
But last Monday, what does she do...bring home another Vonnegut book...this one entitled Slaughter-House-Five. I thought it was about the neighbor's house where they are continuously killing little mice and moles and sometimes even birds and leaving them on our porch. Mistress Elizabeth doesn't know about the neighbors...she keeps blaming Sophia and me...she knows better then to blame Othello... he's such a lazy old brute. He used to be a real fighter, then he got his ass whipped really bad, and it scared him half to death...now he's a pacifist like Mistress Elizabeth...mamby-bamby, that's what I call him. He couldn't catch a mouse if one sat on his head!
Anyhow, I'm going to try to give this book a try and see what old Mr. Vonnegut is up to now...I see it's about a Pilgrim...so just maybe he's going to talk about the killing that went on between the Pilgrims and the Native Americans...but I also saw, when I paged through it, something about aliens from outer space. I really do believe this guy is wierd...I don't know why Mistress Elizabeth likes him so much! Oh well, this book just doesn't fire me up...think I'll dream about Trafamadoria...I like living in only happy moments where time and space mean nothing. What did I just say...time and space mean nothing...holy cow, of course space means something....I like my space on the steamer chair!
Noticed the Mistress went out again in her Zoom-Zoom Lemon car...what did she bring home? Another Vonegut book...Cat's Cradle is the name. Hump! If she thinks I'm giving up this steamer chair for a cradle, she's as looney as Vonnegut....she can have the damn cradle...or better yet, Othello can!
Ophelia lives with Mistress Elizabeth in a house in the Woods. This is her first book review for Gather.

As for Hawking's book, he's another Vonnegut...talking about TIME. Even without a watch, I know what time it is...eating time, that's what!
Then of course, Oates wrote Big Mouth and Ugly Girl...Mistress Elizabeth didn't bring that one home either...I think it's because she has a big mouth!
So Alison, I think I'll come and visit you house and peruse your library. By any chance, do you have a steamer chair?
Shannon...if you don't keep up with Mr. Bush's new law, NO CAT LEFT BEHIND....Sage and Mocha will have to go to summer school. Heck, worst yet, Vonnegut will classify them as Reeks and Wrecks.
As for increasing her prose, maybe I should recommend that book to the Mistress....her efforts in that department are sorely missing....she needs to bone up on that aspect.
As for the afghan....are you harbouring him from the Taliban...and if so...why are you pulling him apart?
My names Skippy I'm a six week old fox terrier from Australia, and I'm just learning to read. I didn't like the first two kinder books Mr Darcey gave me to read.
''Puss in Boots'' and ''The Cat in the Hat''. But last night he dropped a book in front of me I could really sink my teeth into.''101 Dalmatians''. I loved your book reviews Ophelia, I hope to be as good a writer as you one day. And don't you give up your steamer chair girl, every animal needs a place to call their own. Mistress Elizabeth does sound very nice though ( for a human), I know Mr Darcey loves having her for a friend, take care.
Skippy.
Your feline friend, Gussie
Skippy.
Anyway, are you coming down the Cape next week? Have a great vacation.
(P.S. I absolutely loved "Player Piano!")
Siesta, the fellow that wrote Crime and Punishment must certainly be reading the works of Magi, the lyrical poet here on Gather.
So Kelly, your cat reads nothing...certainly she's ready for the Wrecks and Reeks! As for your doggie reading Harry Potter....mmmm...I'm a wee bit afraid of BLACK MAGIC!
Princess...numbers bore me and I do not think, even by osmosis, stock quotations would find their way into my head. As for Mistress Wilma leavin' ya to go on vacation, what do you think my mistress just did...she took off to a swanky resort and left us all home...said she had to help her sister take care of the Mother Figure...but I'm sure she was partying up a storm!
Benadette...that was a Purrfect comment....quite clever of you!
Talouse, I loved "The Art of Toilet Paper Artwork" though I must admit after reading the book and following the directions, Mistress Elizabeth got rid of all the toilet paper and now just the Sears catalog is in the john...quite slippery to do fine art with!
Just loved The Hobbit, carolion...now that's one book both the Mistress and I can agree on.
Imagine, Mitzi can't be bothered reading...another Reeks and Wrecks candidate!
Diana...Mistress Elizabeth, too, is really glad she found Player Piano first...she really enjoyed it...loved the black satire.
The result: My son: - They're not reading anything, they're cats.
My husband: They are not reading; somebody has to come up for air.
Ched and Mao do not read; at least, I've not seen evidence - ever - of them reading anything.
But Emma Peel seemed to have read The Relaxation Response. At least, she was once photographed near it and was never tense.
Mao and Ched have adopted Relaxation techniques, too.
Ophelia is so cute.
As for your husband's comment, that may well be true. If everyone is reading in your house, then someone has to do all the work! I imagine poor Cheddar Cinderella is exhausted from all the real work at your house!
Relaxation Response...is that the New Age crap...sounds like they are into what the Master is into at this house!
Oh and Kathryn I am not cute...I am extremely beautiful...don't you know Mistress Layla gave me the Empress crown?
As for Kim Harrison...Dead Witch Walking sounds even too scary for me. All the humans died in this story...just supernaturels are alive...but did they say anything about kitties... that's what I'm wondering.
"In Xanadu did Kubla Kat
A splendid sofa-bed decree
With silken cushions soft and fat
A perfect feline habitat
Set on a gilt settee."
So you see, that old dead guy knew how to treat his cat...."a splendid sofa bed"!
Amelia, a dog book, you have to be kidding...I would NEVER read a dog book. What could they possibly write about a dog?
Now about the Saxons and the Vikings...though the mistress doesn't violence...if it's historical, she'll eat it up even if there's jabbing and stabbing...she always says, "The reason you study history is to learn the mistakes of the past and not make them again." Guess Bush never took a history class!!!!

This is a great book review Ms Ophelia.
My human is reading Dangerous Tides by Christine Feehan...only one cat in there though... she's got a bad paranormal addiction so reads a lot of books about Vampires, witches, magic users and Were-creatures, I get anxious when she starts reading a whole string of Werewolf stories one after the other though... not my idea of suitable reading material... makes me want to fluff my tail and hiss!
I just googled Margaret Atwood because I have never seen anything written by her on Mistress Elizabeth's bookshelves and yet I think she would really enjoy this Canadian writer...the prose that is...she has a real hard time with poetry...so that may not be for her. Anyone who writes about cat's eyes sounds like an author for me!
Mo`zy....this is very "serious" writing...I hopin' to become a New York Times book reviewer...they have high standards, you know!
yes, carolyn, I am a beautiful feline and am very photogenic...or at least I think so!
