This weekend we celebrated our 12th Wedding Anniversary away from home - our first real trip away from the kids. We desired nothing more but togetherness, beauty, and solitude. We would not be disappointed! On the way to our destination, we pulled off to marvel at the Susquehanna River (I am from California where rivers are little more than a trickle).
Then we continued on towards our destination, Pine Creek Gorge, otherwise known as the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon (we viewed it from the overlook located at Leonard Harrison State Park) -- which certainly lived up to it's name!
The beauty we sought appeared in both our surroundings and the creatures that reside there.
We came here searching for new sights and possibly an adventure while enjoying our time alone. First we visited the Lookout Tower so we could see "for hundreds of miles". We got more exercise than we'd bargained for, but it was well worth the sweat!
At our next stop at Darling Run, my husband showed me the way down a small path to the water and wound up teaching me how to skip rocks. Who knew that something so simple would be so relaxing and fun for both of us?
I loved the plants and flowers along the paths and I had to take some pictures of them. After all, we won't be seeing them for quite a while.
It seemed that the weekend didn't last long enough and, though we didn't want to go home, a storm was brewing. When the clouds and drizzle set in, we felt it best to head out. This bridge is over the Susquehanna River heading from York, PA to Columbia, PA.
Looks like our Amish friends have the same idea: Get home before the sky opens up! At least we could still enjoy the sights through the windows of our car ... and it was still about togetherness and the beauty we could observe.
