Week in Review:
Last week we read about Charles Albright, Joseph Ball, Richard Chase, Jeffrey Dahmer, and Joseph Paul Franklin. It was interesting to see some of the different methods and reasoning’s behind why they turned into such monsters. I hope everyone enjoys last week’s articles; there were some awesome discussions in there!
Serial Killer’s in the News:
Serial Killer Kemp who is known as the “co-ed” killer went up for parole last week and thankfully was denied. He was convicted and received 8 concurrent life terms for murders of eight women between the ages 15-23, and his mother in 1972 and 1973. Currently he is housed at the California Medical Facility in Vacaville and will be eligible for parole again in 2012. Read More Here!
On July 27, 2007 Birmingham, Alabama arrested Bruce Mendelhall in connection to a murder. He was arrested at a truck stop. The police suspect that he is connected to nearly 20 other murders that span the United States. Currently he has confessed to six of them and police are working to gain more information on the others.
He appeared in court on August 2, 2007 and waived his right to a preliminary hearing. In which case, it goes straight to the Grand Jury. I will continue to keep you updated as this case progresses. Read More Here!

The teacher who publicly ridicules his students, the therapist who undermines the confidence of her patients, the cheating spouse who left you in debt, the cantankerous neighbor who seems to just lay in wait for the chance to cause trouble and the doctor who belittles you and your "so-called" symptoms. Quite likely, all of these are sociopaths that will never commit highly publicized murders or even serve time. Typically, sociopaths are chameleonic, charming, intelligent and attracted to positions of power or authority. They will climb the social ladder as high as their own desire, abilities, and opportunity will allow. All sociopaths have a desire to "win", but their definitions of "winning", their personal goals, can be as vastly different as the symptoms of sociopathy itself.
I did mis-speak myself with the statisics. It's an estimated 4% of the US populace, or one out of every 25. Better odds but still disturbing. Sorry about that crossed wire in my last post though. lol I just happen to meet a higher volume than average. ;) The definition of "psychopath" (which is the more controversial word for a sociopath)"a mentally ill or unstable person; especially : a person affected with antisocial personality disorder" doesn't give us much to go on. Most simply put, a sociopath is any individual who, for whatever reason, is permanently lacking a conscience.
"When deciding whom to trust," Dr. Stout advises, "bear in mind that the combination of consistently bad or egregiously inadequate behavior with frequent plays for your pity is as close to a warning mark on a conscienceless person's forehead as you will ever be given." Honestly, I Highly recommend her book "Sociopath Next Door", it's a real eye-opener!
