I could easily spend two hours or more on gather. I think I'm pretty normal. It's entertaining, relaxing, and informative. I'd rather do this than watch a two hour movie most times.
No doubt -- I feel emotionally drained if I don't get to spend some quality time here, which is so precious. It helps to recharge your intellectual batteries, for sure. Just keep things in balance and everything will be fine!
I don't spend "straight" time here, but I check in quite often during the day. I gues... well, here's how I would tell if I'm spending too much time online-
Am I ignoring things to play online- chores, errends, etc? Am I rushing home to check what happened new? Do I have something I should be doing?
Honestly, if you have nothing your time or attention calls to, then no, you're not spending too much time here. That's my thoughts.
I've had times where it took me close to an hour just to read everyones articles, poems and view pictures and leave comments. I spend so much time writing in the comment section that I don't write many articles, most go unread anyway. Maybe I need catchier titles or something.
George, I don't think two hours is terrible. When you think about the fact that you are reading good stuff for the most part and in your case your articles are very interesting and always create an opportunity for various comments which tells you that people are interested. Like Susan says, "it's better than watching TV" and I couldn't agree more. Keep up the good work here on Gather, your brain will thank you later for keeping it active.
I've spent two hours, a few times. But then, with a business and a fulltime job, two sons and house to care for, and a poetry group...I've gone days where all I can spend is two minutes. If you enjoy it, that's what counts. (Umm..as long as you eat , and wash etc...no worries...) :-D
sounds ok to me. I'm usually on here in the late evenings for about that much time. I also sometimes come here when my son's napping in the afternoons for a few minutes at a time while I'm doing other things.

It's not too much. I mean, you spend your free time the way you want to spend your free time. If it makes you happy and it doesn't hurt anyone, why not?

I will say this. IF your computer time interferes with normal daily life, neglecting things you might otherwise be doing, then it's too much. Otherwise no harm, no foul.
Whose to say what is too much.. if it interfers with your normal daily routine then yes.. but if it is a past time that you enjoy then I say go for it. As everyone has commented thats what Gather is all about!
I spend way too much time on the computer overall, but yes, I'm spending more time on Gather than I should. It's addicting. When I'm still Gathering at 12:30 am and I have to get up for work at 4:45, that's a problem. I've said it before, and am sure I'll mention it again, I need a 12 step program for this.
Oh, Jerri, that was going to be my excuse . . . dialup! I know I spend too much time on the computer . . . just ask my mother. LOL I would like to find a way to get more out of Gather and contribute more, but just reading and commenting takes so much time. :-(
And I should be packing . . . our closing has been set up for this coming Monday. Cross your fingers that it happens THIS time!
Two hours normal? You've seen what everyone has said. I spend at least that much time on Gather daily. No kids and no husband, however, so I'm not taking time from them. How many hours do people waste in front of a TV at night? From 7 until 11 or midnight? Gather is more productive than TV.
You'll know if you're on too much. If you're wondering you might want to look at your life and see if there are other things you are neglecting due to the time spent here that you would choose if making a direct choice.
George, since you asked this question, I am going to give you my honest answer. I don't think there is anything wrong with spending two hours a night on Gather unless you are ignoring your family or duties to do so. What I have noticed is that you seem to be spending a great deal of that time publishing "articles" that require little thought or effort. Like this one. When I used to spend more than two hours a night on Gather, I spent most of it reading and commenting - because other people published interesting or entertaining articles for me to read and discuss. These days, I spend less than thirty minutes here.
Almost always. And since I don't make anywhere near the points others do, I'm betting that many spend a lot more time here. If I had the time, I know I would. Gather is full of fascinating things to explore.
