1. I can double check to make sure the prices are correct, sometimes those cashiers are so fast that you miss something.
2. There are usually very few people in the self-check lines and once you get to your spot you can scan and go without delay. I'm all about the speed!
Believe me, where we have these types of registers, the cashiers are still very busy with customers that don't use the self-check lanes. They aren't standing around doing nothing!
1) I USE self-checkouts when there are lines to leave more cashiers available for "real" customers, and the operating system in them runs slower and you can't scan as quickly. No matter how fast you try to be, you will check out more slowly on a self-checkout.
2) You cannot write checks on self-checkouts. If you purchase alcohol on self-checkouts it flags you and stops the transaction, no matter how old you are. You can't buy or reload shopping cards on self-checkouts.
3) I like doing my job, like serving the customers, and suspect that they are not getting the best service when the store gets too "self-serve" focused.
Now, as a cashier, I can tell you that it is a very rare thing that I "redline" (that's when we stand up there and beg you to check out with us). When I am not busy, I am SUPPOSED to be dusting off all the shelves in my checkout line, looking around for mislaid merchandise, stocking candy and gum, and other things which contribute to the general appearance and image of the store. A cashier that does their job right, if the store's scheduling system is operating correctly, should not have much time to stand around. For me, it's usually less than twenty minutes out of an eight hour day. :-)
That being said, plenty of my coworkers stand around and gossip ten or twenty minutes at a stretch, and one coworker actually leaves her station to go talk to the door greeter, even if my register, right beside hers, has four or five people deep in line... *sigh*
Self checkouts are fine... if everyone else is busy and you're only buying one or two things. They're too slow and cumbersome, though, for large purchases - just my opinion.
They took them out of my local K-mart because they said there was too much theft going on with them.
Hire a real checker!!!
I can live with either way....
Other than that, I love them. So easy to use and I won't have that senseless 1 item in a bag thing happening!
They're supposed to be for express sales, 10 items or less.
