I find as a writer, that an old dictionary is a great tool.
In fact, the older the dictionary, the better.
Now I have two very old dictionaries that I use, but I have others that are not so old, and a newer one.
I have a real old one that is about six inches or so thick.
I think every English word ever thought of at that time is in here, with about twenty to thirty meanings for each word.
Many of the meanings have old, but great sounding words.
There are words that would fit better in the 1600's than in 2007 in this book.
I love it.
Believe it or not, I found it at a dump.
Where I live, we have a building at the local dump called The Swap Shop.
If you have something you no longer want, you can leave it in the shop for someone else to take.
Of course, you can look over all of the items there and take home what you want.
Some of it is junk, and some is not.
There is the occasional antique there if you hit it just right.
One day, I went in, and there was this dictionary.
My first thought was that my writing is going to be at a higher level because of my find!
It is a gem.
I have ideas and I'm about to write a book.
This dictionary will help.
As I said before, the older the better.
Imagine the words I can use.

But ...
They are all over the state!
Also subscribe to: wordoftheday@yourdictionary.com . There's always a new obscure word in my inbox.
If you are doing an article in Gather's publish area. Every time you hit enter you get a line - it is set up to double space for some obscure reason. You have to go to Word or something to set it up differently - or use HTML codes - and I get so tired of using them on my auction sites, I want a rest when I come here. So a lot of my stuff is double spaced too.
George, you will have to check out my group - Learn a new word - when I was trialing peoplepc they had a word a day on the sign in page - I saved many of these that I had not heard/seen before and put them all in that group. I need to sign up to a word a day thing again so I can continue that... but anyone can post there, it is not moderated or anything.
I love learning new words, old words, etc.
In the old days everything was hand made with skill and care, including words.
I'm always amazed at how they have changed over the years. The words they have added.
I must admit though; I use online dictionaries more now than hard copies.
i still have one .old is gold
